who makes thier own feed?

I make my own feed for them. A simple grain mix, sprouts, and free range. I got 15 eggs out of 16 hens, despite the cold weather! Grain reallly does help em lay despite what the people here say.......

Wow what a coop... Mine is only good in the insulation department. (Insulation R38 ceiling R26 walls) Other than that it is covered with tar paper...

I live in E Tennessee, so insulation is not even a consideration. If extreme weather came I would put a garbage bag over the turbine vent and possibly block both gable vents. I am wondering if your coop breathes as it should? Permanent full time ventilation is vital to the health of poultry. They are susceptible to lung ailments. A coop can be draft free and still can breathe and allow foul vapors, etc to escape.

Until one experiences a well formulated home feed mix they will never know...

It is like the difference between cooking homemade food from scratch and eating a microwave TV dinner...

What age is your flock? Mine laid like gangbusters their first year and all thru the winter. Following summer/fall good, but a little slower. This winter it has been sporadic with around half or more of the flock molting. I have ranged from 2 to 15 eggs a day out of 21 hens. Mine are almost 2 yrs old tho, and each year they do lay less. I give them a wide variety of eats, and greens all winter long. I even pick their favorite wild greens during winter when weather allows. Mine have never been fed the feed ration only, not even as 3 day old chicks. I always picked clover and added cabbage, beet and carrot greens, dandelions to their daily chick feed ration. Figured the closer to natural, the better their health would be. Still do that. They do not get any fast food scraps because we do not eat that junk ourselves. They do get tons of raw produce and greens year round tho.

They are 10 monthes old. BUT until I started sprouting and making feed I was getting less than 4 eggs a day and thats when I had 18 hens, I now have just 16.

That is odd all right. Such a difference between my flock and yours at the same age. It could be the breeds too tho that make the difference. I just feed mine Dumor to this day, but supplement every day with lots of varieties of treats 3 times a day. In the summer they get grape tomatoes daily, more than they can eat if I let them. I plant extras.

I have Rhodies, Rocks, Black Aussies, and Buff Comet hybrids.
