Who Misses Their Chickies?

Mine are still brooding in my bedroom(just two). I miss them anyway because I have to rearrange and lock up all my predators to bring them out and that isn't practical to do for long periods. Yup, I'm leaving to go hang with them now.

My first batch of chicks I kept inside until they were 12 weeks old, but I only had 4. They were in a big brooder box in my kitchen.

This time around we had 14 chicks... the dust was UNREAL. I moved them out to their new space this weekend, and the first night I didn't sleep at all lol.

Now I go out and visit them throughout the day. I do miss them though!! Its just like kids but it happens faster!!
By the time they are ready to move out, you are sick of their mess and their noise, but when they are gone you long in their heart for the little babies they were.

Can you tell I am going through empty chicken nest AND empty mama nest?? lol

I had 13 ducklings and 1 adult duck in my bedroom once and the dust in just one month was so unbelievable. Everything was covered in dust, no matter how much I cleaned. I hate dust so much now.

I just do that...they're on my feet lol.
And I made the interim brooder big enough to sit in.

It's a normal progression of the disease, there are eggs in the bator.

I know what you mean i live in TX so it is already getting warm....so i moved mine out this week and i have only had them for 4 weeks....but i am getting A LOT of excercise walking out to check on the peepers.

Mine are just over 7 weeks old and I turned off their heat light for the first time tonight.

It's only supposed to get down to 66 degrees... but Wednesday I'll be a wimp and turn it back on cuz it will get down to 48.

ETA: forgot to mention, I'm hatching again on the 25th through 27th. My wife says it's a disease.

Dont get me wrong I really like my chickens and love having them, but I only keep them in for about 2 weeks then off to the brooder (outside) they go. I hatch in rotations so I have chicks in the house for about 10-12 weeks straight. I am always ready for them to go out. I get tired of dusting in the room they are in every day and changing the bedding all the time to keep down the odor. Large pens are also much easier to keep clean with less maintenance and I feel better that they have more room now. Outside isn't that far away and I am healthy and able to enjoy them outdoors. I tend to spend more time with the ones outside anyways. I like being out there. On gloomy or rainy days you can always bring a few in for a couple hours of entertainment. Believe me people , outside isn't that far away for most. Whats wrong with going out in the yard?

I have to admit I'm glad to put mine outside when the time comes. I love them, but they get messy as heck confined in their brooder all the time. I love to see them get outside and start doing natural chicken stuff.

I've got 4 right now in my living room. They are so funny... they will cheep and squawk until I come sit in my recliner beside their tub. he he he then they all relax and go to sleep.

I'm also getting an incubator and have plans with my buddy to buy a big batch of broilers!

and of course there is the nice lady on this board who is offering to sell me serama eggs! lol

I miss my chicks in the house but not the dust..I so want to have more but going to hold off till all my chickens are laying which will be a while and do one big bunch from combination of all of them and get it over with all at once.. I hate that dust in house, but love the little chickies..

yeah, I was ready to move them out too, Even tho I loved having them in so much. If I could have had a better set up to make cleaning easier...well, they'd probably still be inside the house! hahah. And I do spend alot of time out in the shed, acting like I'm doing something. Last nite I was actually moving stuff around to have a heat lamp over a chair (for myself oh and the 3 chickens that would be on my lap and chest of course) But it is a big change having them outside (you still hear the peeping in your head though...how long does that last?? lol not that i mind)
