This is a new one to me....I've put food coloring ON the dogs food though to find out which one was pooping in the house. Just don't think it's a good idea to put something foreign and unsanitzed INSIDE the bird. Maybe they meant just around the outside. Also, I think it's always best to ask a question like this BEFORE you actually do it. Call me crazy!

It's perfectly safe and many breeders do this. The eggs don't come out bright rd or blue but just very faint streaks. It is just noticeable to a point where you may even have to use a flashlight to see the colors. You may not even be able to see the yellow dye either.

And forgive me for not being terribly helpful here, but I hope that food coloring has restricted use once it is used on the vent of a chicken!

And no I have never used that method for iding eggs.....I have learned what each ones eggs look like and have gone from there, BUT only two of my chickens are laying so far and when the third one starts it will be easy to tell cause she will lay an olive green colored egg instead of brown.

But I can see why you would want to know which hen is laying. I have 16 hens that could be laying, and I can tell for the most part who is laying by egg color, but there have to be some that are not laying at all. I am only getting on average about 10 eggs a day. So I am feeding about 6 free loaders. This is a rather interesting idea and maybe easier than trying to house each of the hens in different areas to find out the same info. I for one would take the non laying hen to auction, and make room for hens that will lay.
For some they may have just one breed and this maybe the only way to tell who is laying out a larger flock.
