We leave for the weekend during summer all the time but haven't been on a long vaca since before the chickens. My 19 yr. old son collects the eggs while were gone and we feed and water everything up so he doesn't have to. He does check them to make sure all are kosher
Get your neighbors hooked right from the start. Invite those with kids to come meet the babies. We were very lucky to have a neighbor wants to have chickens, but knows it would be too hard on his 5 dogs so they visit and live vicariously through us.
Certain times of the year can require more care so be sure to plan your vacation around that.
I offer a milking/chore service for people who want to go hunting and fishing in the summer. perhaps you could ask a local 4-h kid to help out... so far I have not had to ask any one to help me but this year I will be needing to find some one to help with the chores... I am going to be hanging out with my hommie down in soldotna....
Dont go on vacation, never have, feel no need to go. Couldnt afford it if we did want to go anyway,. So, no one except us has watched my chickens for me ever since we started keeping them over three years ago.
I have gone on vacation. I have several friends who take turns coming over to check the feed and water and to collect the eggs. I fill the feeders and waterers before I go. I leave extra water bowls out.
