Who will lay first!? *pics included* UPDATE: First Egg 8/14

You can also tell who is getting close to laying more accurately by feeling the width and pliability of the cartilage connecting their pubic bones. You palpate right below their vent where the bones are and if you can fit 2-3 fingers in between the bones, they are very close to laying. The closer together and firmer the cartilage, the farther away they are from laying

Well I ran right out and started violating my chickens!!

I have a full 2 finger girl and a 1.5 finger girl! BRING ON THE EGGS LADIES!!!

I did the same thing!! I could only catch two. Sunny and another one I know is too young for comparison. Sunny is a 2-3 finger width apart!! I wish I could catch the others

Funny! My chickens won't let me come near them - except the New Hampshire Red will let me occasionally stroke her back - but only briefly. I guess that's one of the drawbacks to buying them when they were already 17 weeks old. I'll get eggs sooner than if I'd gotten new chicks - but they won't be pets who let me hold them.

I'm new to raising chickens. I've heard about the red combs indicating they are getting close to laying eggs. But when they squat for you is a sign as well?
I have two Plymouth Rock Pullets who when I pet them will squat down. They haven't layed eggs yet they were hatched around March 17-20th.

Well.. still nothing..

I did have my EE Sunny squat at me the other day when I was petting her back so I guess that's a good sign..

This is getting annoying..
