Who would have known?!! LOL

I currently have 10 hens at laying age. The first 15 cost me $150, that included the coop and run. I did lose one of those. I then bought 5 more that were just starting to lay for $34 and 2 collards, I like trading things if I can. My feed cost $12 for a fifty pound bad of laying crumbles or scratch and I have customers that buy all the extra eggs I can spare so my chickens are pretty much paying for themselves right now.

Are you planning on creating a business with the cute little chicks?? I am thinking the same thing. Although I only started out thinking a few chickens, a few eggs, and less bugs. But they are just too cute and in a higher demand than I thought. Plus when I was looking for some more local chicks I wasn't able to find much. So I thought "What the heck, I'll start my own little chicken farm."
Yes, I want to breed. I've started incubating my own eggs, and even moved to a rural setting with a big barn and land to raise more. I started out with four chickens. Now I have 63 birds with more in the incubator and 10 more due to hatch tomorrow.

I have not narrowed it down to the breeds I want to focus on yet. Though I am thinking barred rock for sure, and definitely silkies. I do have a few other breeds that I am thinking about, but it depends on how the roosters are. I currently have a cochin rooster, a Houdan rooster, and an EE rooster. I probably will breed the EE's, as they are very hard to find in my area. We don't have hatcheries that sell them in Eastern Canada. You either have to import them from the US or have them shipped from out West @ 140$ in shipping alone. I bought mine from breeders 4 hours away.

I had the same problem looking for chicks. You either can't find what you want or you have to order it and wait. I have 22 assorted chickens. Mostly for myself. I have some EE's & Silkies in the incubator right now. I'm thinking I'll breed tose two and something else. Just not sure what yet. And I'm thinking that I might even start raising meat birds next year. I'm also toying with the idea of trying some "project" chickens too. Right now though I only have 2 bantam roosters so I think I'm going to have to get another....maybe. I just couldn't find anything in my area when I was looking for eggs to hatch or an interesting breed of chicken to raise. Good luck!

I just got 6 Barred Rocks and I love them!!!

So much friendlier than my Red Sex Links. They are my favorite breed so far.
