Just another thought.

We sell our eggs the same way except we just have a cheap, unlocked metal "yard sale" type cash box in the fridge with the eggs. every now and then a customer just doesn't have the correct change or is just short on money that day and will just take a dozen or two and pay twice next time. It's on the honor system and I don't worry a whole lot about it. Some days the money box is a few dollars short, some days there are a few extra dollars in it. We keep track and at the end of the year it averages out that we are always a few dollars ahead (More money than we sold eggs). I think sometimes people just pitch in a couple dollars extra at some point.

BTW, we sell ours for two dollars a dozen on large brown eggs and the same price for an eighteen pack of small white eggs. All the market will bear here in our rural area.




Then again, I really don't worry much about it either.

If I did, I'd make them come inside to get them.

We usually have more eggs than we can ever use or sell, so my wife gives some away every week anyway to some of the elderly folks we know. We sold I think around 125 dozen last month and gave away about 27 dozen.

Pricing is different in different areas. Our little local grocery sells eggs for two local chicken owners. Normally they are about $2.50 a dozen ... yesterday they were all on sale for .99~!

I live too far away from town to do the cash box thing but I do charge $3 a carton. Free range organic eggs are almost $4 a carton at our local grocery store so I think it's more than fair. My hubby takes most all of the eggs to his work and they buy them there. I sell to other people like the mail lady etc.... and usually give my neighbor whatever eggs he wants. He helps us out a lot and I figure the least I can do is give him some free eggs although he always insists on paying. I let him give the girls each a buck to put in their piggy bank!!!

That is terrible that someone would steal eggs, Put another sign up and say something to the effect that due to stealing you now have cameras up to protect your egg business ( even if you don't). The thought of being caught on camera might deter them from doing it again. I worked at a bank once and we had signs on all our ATM machines that they were under surveillance but it wasn't. Still, that fake little camera inside that machine probably made a lot of thieves too nervous to even think about trying to get into one of those things. I hope you are able to continue your egg business with your honor system, we had wanted to try something like that to sell our eggs.

i build and sell fancy bird hses. bat hse. and other such stuff---all paid on the honor system--the great folgers coffee can--last year a biker dude came in , asked me prices--which we're clearly marked--{ i know now he was scoopeing the place out }---later coffee can cash was missing -i figured there was maybe 60 bucks in it- missing also was the church style bird hse. he was closely looking at --
