I think you need to check out your history here. The Republican Party was founded with the express purpose of ending slavery and bringing black Americans into full citizenship. Beginning with the Civil Rights Act of 1866 through the Civil Rights Act of 1968 Republicans were the moving force.

Everett Dirksen was the moving force behind the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Remember who it was that opposed it? Southern Democrats.

Yes, but Democrats were the first to open their eyes after the sixties and realize racism was wrong.

I really wish you would stop equating members of minorities with "looking for handouts." It's a sweeping generalization that has racist overtones. There is no place for racism in 21st century America, and there shouldn't have been a place for it at anytime, anywhere.

I've spent a lot of time in this thread today, so I'll bow out before I say anything that gets me in trouble.

I can say the same thing for abortions, it's the 21st century America why be so barbaric?

I'm certainly not rich, but I'll gladly give up a little extra of my money so that some kid who was born into a situation outside of his control doesn't have to deal with what I did. Maybe kids can have better chance at education, so they don't end up a high school drop out like me. I'd like to see kids with help from the community so they don't end up in jail because their one parent is working constantly and can't really be around to give them guidance. Maybe with some good community outreach they could have a better influence than a guy who was a high school drop out who was killed by his own brother before he was 20 because they were high and playing with a gun.

Maybe community service could help a kid reconcile the fact that just because his dad was a drug addict and ran off with his rehab nurse, that he isn't who his father was and he doesn't have to repeat that cycle. Maybe a community that cares could help a kid deal with it when his step dad loses it and starts a high speed chase back to his trailer where he shoots a couple of cops and then blows his own head off just after setting the place on fire. But the way it is now, there's limited to no help for those kids.

When this is your story you realize that it's anything but fair for people to talk about all the lazy people who want to take advantage of the system. If this was your story, I can gaurantee you wouldn't look at community service as a problem, but rather as a solution.

We should volunteer because it has the chance to change the world. If we realized that without each other we would fail maybe a government wouldn't have to come along and practically force people to serve.

Before I bow out of this thread for the night, I just wanted to say, THIS is why I am a teacher, and why I want teachers to get the help they need. The examples you provided, including your own story, are not off-base whatsoever, especially where I teach.

I can't solve a kid's home issues in 180 hours (that's all I get with each one of them per year -- how many days does that equate to?), yet, a lot of times, those home issues are keeping them from breaking the cycle their parents began. Who can do homework when dad's drunk again, mom's sneaking around with her boyfriend and the younger brothers and sisters need cared for? It's kind of hard to communicate in a timely manner with parents that don't have a cell phone or a house phone and work three jobs just to make ends meet... These are the things I deal with.

It's not as simple as reading, writing, and 'rithmetic. I'm teaching human beings, not programming robots. Educational theory teaches that emotional and physical needs of a child must be met before that child is receptive to learning. One grade level behind in first grade is equal to four grade levels behind freshman year...

Why do Republicans want children to be born into ANY situation, but refuse to provide programs that help the children that are born? I just don't get it.

Okay, seriously, I'm going to go look at some comb genetics stuff just to distract myself. (I love this election because it has made me passionate about politics again).

People don't want their taxes rasied! Yes, I want after school programs, I want it to be cheaper for kids to buy a nice lunch at school, I want teachers to be paid better, BUT I'm willing to pay for it! I'm not expecting all of these things while wanting my taxes lowered. That is my main issue with the Democrats. They want all of these things, which is fine, but they aren't willing to pay for it. Makes no sense.​

I am not sure I am following your statement. You are saying that you want great services from the government and you want to give the government your money so they can provide all these services. But a democrat does not want to give the government the money? Don't most republicans get mad that democrats are always taxing and spending it?

Hear the statement about cutting taxes for 90% of the people. Sure taxes the Oil company and other company. Who pays those taxes the people who buy the gas. Any taxes are alway pass on or added to the price,be it gas,cars or milk.
There is no reason to keep raising taxes. Every year most people move into a higher tax bracket. just check avg. income from 1970 and 2000.
Same for property taxes avg. price of a home have been raised over all the years, but these taxes are alway being raised by % when you pay more every 2 years without the increase.

God bless America! Three things happened today that makes me a very happy man. I got a check in the mail today that I wasnt expecting. Two years ago I got a new car and was expecting a refund for the sevice contract on the vehicle I traded for the new one. Well, as fate would have it, the people I had the service contract with filed bankruptcy. Today I got a refund check from the dealer for their share of the contract. Yippee!. Then I got an e-mail from a local chicken breeder that said he had what I was looking for and am now the proud Daddy of 2 adult RIR hens, 1 adult BR hen, 2 RIR pullets and 1 BR pullet. Then to finally make my day, I find out that JM names Sarah Palin his choice for VP. Two weeks ago I told my wife that I thought she would be a great pick. Two weeks ago! And today, here she is! Kinda like winning the lottery and not getting any money...well except for the possible tax savings anyway. It is ironic that the Libs are saying she is using her handicapped child as a prop for her run for VP. If it were Barry Hussein's kid and someone else said that, it would be racism. Believe me the real race card has yet to be played and we will see it soon I fear. As a career military person I would like to tell you that I have met and served with black people that I would have given my life for. Do I think blacks should have a fair shot in life? Of course I do. Do I think blacks should earn whatever they get in life? Of course I do. Do I believe that the Libs think that voting for Barry is an atonement for how blacks have been treated by white people in the past? Of course I do. You reap what you sow and Barry has sowed nothing! You talk about Sarah's inexperience? Which would you rather have....an inexperienced President or an inexperienced VP? No brainer me thinks. You may see some red, white and blue banners at the RNC convention, but I guarantee you you you wont see "Barry's Temple"! The audacity of the man. You would think he was the second coming of Christ!
