I agree, it peeves me off like nothing else. Bidding should be just like a bid in person...not a machine. If you can't do the work, why should you get the prize...
It stinks when this happens....but I do it ALL the time!
Ok...here's how to do it without a program. Go to ebay and open the auction page, open another browser window to the same page. Bid as high as you are willing to go..BUT stop when it asks you to confirm the bid on the second page. Go back to the first window (I use 2 windows, you can do separate tabs in the same window if you want) When it gets to the last minute start hitting the refresh button....I go all the way down to 3 seconds left. (you can go earlier...that's just my time) If you're outbid, switch to the other window, hit the button to finalize your bid....and you win!
(unless the other persons max is higher, that is why you chose your absolutely highest bid and SAVE IT for last) Bid your highest too soon and someone else comes along and outbids you...then you overbid that and get buyers remorse. lol
There's always the chance that someone else is doing the same thing or has an autobid, but I've won most often using this method.
That's exactly what I started doing after that! I didn't understand how the eBay system worked, before. My last transaction on there brought me up to a grand total of...nine. I was a total eBay noobie, but I'm a fast learner. I won my next auction.
