Hi, my hens refuse to touch the dried whole corn.. I don't know why.. Too big kernels? I noticed that some people give what looks like popping curb to their flock, but, we just bought the regular whole corn... A 50 lb. bag for the winter! Any suggestions?

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock! It could be too big for them. I use cracked corn for my chickens. Just to make it so the 50lbs don't go to waste try and crush the kernels for them. Maybe then they'll start eating them.

I would try soaking some in water for a couple of days and then feed it to them. I always soak or ferment my mixed corn as I think it helps the digestive process.

I also get the cracked corn. Some of my chickens won't eat the bigger pieces but others will. I agree with Birdrain92's suggestion to crack the bag of corn you have so it's not wasted and just remember to get cracked the next time you need it.

We went through a similar issue once with accidently buying a 50-lb. bag of feed pellets instead of crumbles. The girls wouldn't touch those pellets and I ended up having to crush them as best I could to get them to eat it. Once you have to crush or crack a 50-lb. bag of something, you won't make that mistake twice! [IMG]

[IMG] so glad you have joined us.

My hens won't touch corn or even cracked corn. They avoid corn in treats or flock blocks, but love canned kernel corn.

And like @NorthFLChick I bought a bag of pellet feed instead of their usual crumbles and they gave it a thumbs down.

Guess they all have their own opinions, as we do , of what they like :)

Corn will put fat on them but, is not nutritionally sound. The main part of their feed should be a good commercial chicken feed geared to their age/purpose.

    Hello!

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to joined the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC. Yeah, I'd take a hammer to it. That should work. I get cracked corn for my girls in the winter months, for the added fat for warmth.
