Whole Foods - Brand X

Pretty happy news! I candled tonight and it appears that eight out of the 12 are developing for sure! Three are maybes - difficult to see much because of their porous shells - and one is a clear. I will recandle in a week and post the results!

I'm posting results in the below thread as well, where you'll find much more information on this topic: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...hing-club-are-you-a-member/1130#post_10289159

Awesome :) I still have to corner the little buggers in the brooder with a camera and post them here. My back has been bad, so I've been kind of laid low and it's hard to fish them out by myself.

Update time!

Dotty, our spotty baby. It's hard to see here, but she's still spotty. And our only obvious female so far.

Unnamed, possible female. She/he has a lot of comb growth, but no color so far. Also, there is a spot of dark feathers on it's back that developed out of nowhere.

Obvious Roo, unnamed. Obvious roo is obvious. Also, he's all white.

And finally, Godzilla!! Dude is obviously a dude (comb is redder in real life than in pic), and is developing like a meat bird. He's a big hefty handful, and not bothering with trifling things such as developing feathers.

Hope you guys get a kick out of these silly birds!

Update: Eleven of my Rock Island eggs are doing fine! Due to hatch on 2/3 or so. Eleven out of a dozen is by far the best fertility rate I've seen, even with unshipped eggs! Way more than I expected. I can't imagine that all eleven will hatch, though. I'll update again next week.

I started seeing veins in my eggs at Day 5. Not sure if you're talking to me, chickerlover ... happy to help if I can. Please post a link to your thread.

Pele, thank you for these great photos! I love seeing them develop. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with "Dotties" too. :)
You're very welcome, this has been a lot of fun mad science for me!

And I'm sure you will get Dotties too! Keep us updated, this is a lot of fun to see what people get.

. I can not wait to see how the look as pullets and as adults! Very interesting!

Pele, regarding the mix. I was thinking about doing this some time ago and the only fertile eggs locally are from chino valley ranchers. I emailed them about their breeds and they kindly replied.

They use red sex links, usually ISA Browns for the hens the put White leghorn or similar roosters in with the hens. They prefer Leghorns because they are light weight and therefore do not rip up the girls as much. They like white so they can visually see the difference between the girls and boys from a distance looking at the flock. I would imagine this is common poultry practice.

Seeing as how this brand was so helpful, if I were you I would do some investigation and shoot your guys a note. You may get the exact mixture for the babies and I suspect the managers would get quite a chuckle!

They sure are cute. I can't wait to see them as adults.
