Can I see a picture of your RSL hens?

That's so strange.. Barring is dominant when using a pure barred rock rooster over any hen. I should get 50% barred, 50% white (with ghost barring). I've hatched over 20, and had had mostly whites. A few barred.

Have you hatched chicks from these? my understanding is the hens should be genetically barred, it's just masked by the dominant white. You should be able to get sex link offspring off them if you use a non-barred rooster, it would be best if the roo is a darker color so the headspot is visible at hatch. That's how folks with white Rocks end up with a barred bird once in a while and freak out--it's just been masked for so long.

It's a theory, anyway!

Hey, donrae--I told you I'd get you a recent photo of the big lemon-blue cuckoo Marans. Took the one in this thread today. I love the way his hackles and saddle feathers are so long they look like a mane going down his back.

Hey-- I saw that pic-he's one gorgeous guy. I'm wanting an EE rooster for the flock this year, and I think I may hold out for a blue based boy, I just love that blue color. He makes pretty babies, too, that's always a good thing. Do you have an idea how much he weighs? He looks massive!

He's BIG. Gotta weigh eight pounds or so. I really want to breed him to my dark Cornish and see if I get a tasty table bird.

I have not tried using a non-barred rooster with them. I have a buckeye rooster I could test it with. I just may do that. Would be interesting

It would be cool to see what's hiding under that white! The red of the buckeye would make some pretty multi-colored babies, I'll bet.

Yes, yes we can. I was just thinking today--it's November, than means only 3 months until the Grange has chicks!!!!!!! I didn't buy a single one last year, just brooded my own, but I'm either going to buy from them or order from MMM this year. what the heck--maybe both!
