whos breaking ice out of the water dishes already

Breaking out the heated waterers today. Been breaking up ice off and on since last week. One heated dog bowl and one that will go under my 3 gallon metal waterer. The girls empty that dog bowl way to fast.

This was the first morning that my son had to break up the water in the pool for the ducks and geese, water buckets haven't frozen as of yet but I know it is coming. I think it is going to be a very cold winter here. Yuck!

My husband and I were talking about this yesterday...everyone up north who has to break up ice in their waterers, AND frozen eggs and whatnot... Thankfully, I won't have to deal with that. Well, twice this January we had standing water freeze, but I feel sorry for all of you!!

I am, and we moved to KY to get away from colder weather. (Used to live north of Chicago) We've already had snow on the ground and ice in the water bowls. Me and the girls are ready to vacation in Florida. Will the airlines take me and 8 chickens???

off and on the last couple of weeks, but this morning, both were frozen solid!

I did buy an extra double wall so I can bring out fresh in the AM and come back
to the house with the frozen one to thaw out for the PM.

No electricity in the coop yet but is in the works. I purchased a heater to go under
the double wall but I do have a question on the heated dog waterers...

I saw one yesterday at the Agway at it's really deep! Don't the birds tip them over?
Can you put a brick or two inside to prevent this?

Probably the wrong place for the question, but happy for any replies. Keep Warm.

FIRST DAY TODAY!!!! 12 degrees this am. Girls faired well in coop. They didn't seem to care for the heat lamp, as they moved away from it. (too warm?) Turned it off. Water was froze this am, but got eggs! We have about a foot of snow.

I, too have been breaking the ice! I finally broke down and bought 2 heated buckets-------one 5 gal. for the goats, and one 9 quart for the chickens. Of course, they won't be in the coop/shed, because the extension cord only reaches to the fence. But at least I won't have to worry about water early in the morning or during the day.

Hi,
We have had iced water bucket a couple of times. I do have a funny story though. One morning as I let them out, throw them there morning scratch, they wait with anticipation....as they do every morning. They are so smart!
One of my girls decided to get a drink and I hear this peck, peck, peck... kinda freaks her out a bit... she looks up at me and I think she is saying, "what happened to my water?"

Then another one comes; peck, peck, peck... no water... just ice!
So, I cracked the surface and they happily dip their beaks in for a fresh drink.. and walk back to pecking at the scratch.
It was funny to watch, I wish I had a video of the whole thing...

Have a great day,
Hope
