well I just bit the bullet and bought two more electric base heaters for my waterers-switching 8 waterers 2x a day is getting old really quick!!! so now I have 3 waterers with heating -they wont come in for 10 more days but at least I know some relief is in sight. I didnt want to but I think I will have to string an extension cord to my outdoor coop for the waterer again this year:-( oh the elctric bill

I use the nipple/bucket setup with a deicer also and absolutely love this setup! No messy coops/wet shavings. How can you go wrong! Even when the weather goes below zero the water is fine, the nipples are fine and the birds are able to drink all they want and u don't have to freeze your .... off!

I put my seed starting mat out in the hen house. 2 one gallon waterers fit on it fine. No more ice in the waterers. Yay!!!

We've had to put in the heated bowl today. The galvanized drinking can was frozen solid! So...this new heated dish is a big one and looks more like a dog dish. I thought that it should be elevated more so that the chickens won't try to roost in it, poop in it, or throw too much wood shavings into it. Should I be concerned about the first two things? We had to put an upside down funnel on their water can to prevent them from roosting on it and having to clean their little 'presents' off it. Just wondering....
