Well, the hatch is over and I got 3 out of 4 ducklings to hatch.

I have another batch due to hatch this monday the 13th. I have 12 of them, so if its like this hatch I can expect 9 out of 12 to hatch. This hatch on monday is mixed color, and gray calls.

I quickly candled my eggs today and noticed that the big egg has its beak rubbing against the air cell. I dont think it was internally pipped but it looked like it was getting ready to. Could he be coming early? They arent due until April 16.

Do you all think I should take some of the eggs out of the incubator and give them to her?

Question.

Who here toe punches? I need to toe punch these ducklings, in order to keep track of what year they hatched. They wont bleed, correct? How do I do it?

Its a lot like ear tagging sheep & goats. You aim between the red veins in the webs. A tiny little punch is what we use. I actually think its supposed to be a type of leather punch. In the dark webs its a luck and fingers crossed thing. There can be bleeding but its never been a lot in my experience. I hope that helps.

Hey Sundown...

I've thougth about trying to hatch the calls in egg cartons - since one of the problems I had was them positioning themselves well enough to get out of the shell - have you always done the egg carton hatching on calls, and if not, did your hatch rate rise when ya switched to it?

Last year when I hatched my calls I used a carton for just hatching. I think it does work better for ducks and chicks - just not geese because the temperature fluctuates too much due to their size. In fact ya know what I used last year - don't laugh either - ya knw those little "egg stands" made out of the cardboard box when you buy Easter egg dye? LOL...I used those for hatching because i didn't have any egg cartons. Worked though.

I have a gosling and another little duckie in the box with ducky # 1 now! They aren't fluiffed yet so I'l wait a few hours and take some pictures. Ducky #2 is black!

Since I have so many more eggs to hatch and these can't be used for breeding due to the color mix - I might sell them. I'm freaking out about how mnay birds I will have once spring is over!

Today is day 18 for mine! I took them off the turner before I left for work. Humidity was averaging 59% so I added a second wick pad. Hopefully this will be ok. I didn't notice any internal pips - what day can I expect that?

I did see the hatch rate go up when I started hatching them in cartons. This time was 3/4. Last year I got 7/8. I will see with the next batch what I get. They are due on monday, 12 of them (gray and mixed color). It seems like they have an easier time getting out of the shells.

Those are the babies. Just took them out of the incubator.
