Who's Hatching Ducks? Hatch With Us!! *Page 3*

so i candled duck eggs one had a blood ring and smelt ewwwwwwwwwwww so i took it out kids (8,10) wanted to see the inside i cracked it open omg the smell was so nasty LOL. But a good learning experience for my csi daughter who loves everything science. I tried to look at chicken eggs and its so hard to see threw the brown eggs I think i need a better light. They are due in like 8 days. Here is hoping i do not have a egg explode in bator.

This is great - we're all pipping together!!!! The one from this morning still hasn't progressed any further (it pipped yesterday and I poked a hole in the membrane this morning). It's still alive; I can see it. Just taking it's good old time. Last time I checked, about an hour ago, I had two more with little pips. I'm trying to restrain myself so I'm staying in the garage working on my quail hutch. Went to TSC today and fortunately they were all sold out of chicks and ducks. WHEW!

Starry, good thing you got the stinker out of there. I have no advice for you because I purposely don't do staggered hatches because I panic...I do hope all goes well.

C'mon duckies!!!!!

I know what you mean!! Mine started pipping yesterday... One quit after pip (very sad) and I have three out and fluffy and dry, three pipped, four half-in, half-out....after a full 24 hours!

These are SLOW compared to quail and the chicks that started hatching just a couple hours before the ducks

I have a question for goose-hatchers...
I am hatching my first geese this week (hopefully)...are they quick like quail...or slooooooooow like ducks?

Thanks!

Four pipped now! Did I mention that I took a vacation day today to watch my ducks hatch? I can see that ain't happening...

They'll all wait until an hour after I leave tomorrow morning.

Barnwife How Slow were they both of mine just have the pip crack i don't dare take them out to see anything.
I'm a firm believer in not disturbing eggs when they are hatching.

How long from pip to the hatch for you? I need a time table of what to expect so i won't worry so much.
I've had chicks take 14 hours to just zip and come out of the egg.
Chicks pip then rest for a long period then they zip and rest again before pushing out of the shell.
I figure a duck was no different so i'm not worried right now.
Mine shouldn't pip and drown i used the dry incubation method and the air cell was just the right size.
My humidity is good also so there should be no dry membranes.

Still a bucket of nerves tho i bet i have shined a light on them 100 times since they pipped

mine have taken up to 3 FULL DAYS to come out and fully fluff. Right now I have four that pipped this time yesterday and are still just poking their little beaks out JUST enough to breathe....

GRRRRRRRRR!

I know I am NOT the best hatcher in the world...but seriously...this takes forever with baby ducks!

It is SOOO worth it!

Quail take MAYBE four hours total...and they all hatch within 24 hours (usually) or the egg is not good.

If only they could be more like quails in their quickness *sigh*

I also notice you're in elyria, OH.

I grew up in Ohio. I kinda miss the wet. It's the reason you get to dry incubate, lol. If I tried it here they'd be dead in a day. In the last six months it has rained 8 times and we have had a burn ban in efeect for all but 12 days in the same six months. I spray my eggs 2-3 times daily just b/c the humidity is at 0% all the time here....I spray them 6 or more times daily for hatching days...and then I am LUCKY to get a 65% humidity. OY! The only bad part about Texas....

And just a little to add...once they fluff they are WAAAAY hardier than chicks. I guess they just take it slow to make sure they are ready to roll when theyre done!
