My husband was NEVER an animal person and he was much less than excited about me getting fowl. But, he IS a technical person...electronics/science/building stuff. I told him how baffled I was about the difference between hygrometer and wet bulb readings and how I didn't know where to put the probe for the thermometer and wanted him to explain how the wafer thermostat worked (I couldn't care less). Then I asked him if he thought he could build a better incubator when he showed interest......slowly but surely, he started helping out.

When it came to candling, he started by taking that over. He is Jewish and his grandfather was an orthodox rabbi, so his grandmother always candled eggs. Then, he started setting up the incubator. After he hatched "his" first ducky last year, he seemed pretty interested.

One day, I took him out to lunch and sat down and asked him if he would like to "become a partner" in my "business" and how much fun we could have if we did this activity "together." He seemed to buy it.

So, there is a division of duties and many times he complains about the drains on his time, the expense and how I go overboard (he has some ground to stand on there), but, he loves his baby ducks.

When I got the Humidaire incubator, he was really interested because it is "built really well" according to him. LOL. It took some months or subtle working, but he went from a city boy who hates to get dirty to a Ducky Daddy. EXCEPT he still wears gloves most of the time when he handles the birds and cannot wait to wash his hands.

Hope this might give some of you ideas about how to involve your spouse in your addiction.

Well, you made a lot of progress. You can't have everything!

(I am so glad my mom was never afraid of us kids getting dirty. She would always just hose us off on the back porch. Very practical woman

I am hatching gooses this week! One embden is pipped and rearing to zip and one lavender goose is internally pipped and pecking.

YAY! My first lavender! I got two eggs from CORancher (Ann) and picked them up at her farm One quit on me about a week ago - but this guy appears to be fine.

I cannot wait!

I have 2 blue eggs from vicki2x2 in my bator!!

Hopefully I won't kill them like I seem to do everything else!

I also have 4 buff eggs from shadyglade in there. i candled them the other night, and 3 of the 4 have moving air cells. The insides don't look scrambled, so I have left them in there for the time being.

Has anyone had any luck with moving air cells hatching?

Hooray! A duckling!

One of my Dutch Hookbills is out!
Geez, these things take FOREVER to hatch. I was about to give up on it when I went to bed last night and this morning... duckling!
Three more appear to have made progress. Today is Day 28.

My ducklings from jenlyn had weird-shaped air sacs that kept turning according to the way I turned them...I didn't realize this was weird...but 3 out of four hatched! VERY cute little ones, btw...rouen blue swedish cross! I know one is a pure rouen (size alone tells this) the other two are swedish-sized, one is bluish and the other is very black on the dark parts...but all have the rouen markings

I can't wait to see how they grow up!

Don't worry, your hatching problems are just a phase! Pretty soon with all your efforts you will be virtually swimming in little chickies and duckies!

Don't give up, and don't get down! DO NOT let your chickies grow in the egg without hope! They need a mommy who beleives in them! They CAN overcome your hatching whoppsies...my hatches are proof of that!

I have only the LG incubators...in a room that heats up to nearly (sometimes more than) 100 degrees daily and has no heat at night other than the brooder lamp...and everyone is doing great! I have had something hatch from each egg type I have tried...including elusive seramas, booted bantams, pheasants, geese, ducklings, quail and MANY types of chickens (ive been busy lol)

I know its heart breaking, but you can do it! Just make your eggies feel the love!

ps...don't hug them TOO hard

I've hatched a ton of ducks with moving air cells, but the gooses were not so good. Don't give up though!
