Who's Setting Eggs This Week[end]? [August 8-14]

I just put 20 bantam BLRW eggs in the incubator this morning

These are from a trio a friend and I bought last January. For some reason fertility has been poor and out of the 18 eggs I set last time only 5 developed, one was an early quitter, broody got off of the nest twice (had a staggered hatch that ran late and had to use a broody for a few days) and the eggs got cold and 1 died and two hatched. Hoping for a better outcome this time

I can't tell you how many hatches I have done this year so far

It is dangerous to have chickens providing fertile hatching eggs and also own an incubator

I will be setting 6 silkie shipped eggs I got from eBay,

I've heard for a better hatch on shipped eggs you should wait 6-8 hours before setting them and then once set don't turn for 7-8 days then after that turn them and the hatch rate will be higher... Has anyone else heard or tried this.

I've heard to let them settle for 12-24 hours before putting them in, I've never made it past 3 hours of settling myself. lol.

Just went to check on my broody maran hen. Apparently my other 3 maran hens are getting in the crate with her and laying their eggs. She has twice as many eggs then what I put under her. I don't know how long they have been doing this. I guess after the ones hatch that I put under her I will get the rest and put in the incubator to give them a fighting chance. It could be a several days hatch. I don't have anywhere else to put the other 3 maran hens to keep them from the broody. I have already took the laying box from them because I had another maran to go broody. She is in there on about 10 to 12 eggs. They both went broody about 2 days apart. Expected to hatch the 18th and 20th.

Anxiously awaiting my eggs....the delivery confirmation says both should arrive today. Last time i did a staggered hatch, and it was too complicated, so im planning to set everything at once. I had a horrible problem with shipping my first eggs. They were supposed to be here in 24 hours, but they took four days! One egg hatched, and I had 5 quitters from that bunch. So I'm kind of paranoid now...I ask if they can ship on Mondays and I wait around until they arrive.
Yeah, I rapidly got sucked into hatching. We have such fun with it, even though out of 3 dozen eggs we only got 9 chicks, and 5 of those were from local eggs, the rest shipped. However, out of the dozen local eggs, they had been laid at undetermined times and picked up and stuck in the fridge! I was shocked at any hatched after that treatment! Shipping is so hard on eggs that if I get 6 out of the two dozen coming, I will be happy.
We just moved to this house like last week (!) so I set the bator up in the dining room and turned it on yesterday. It's a great temp and humidity. 100 degrees and 30% humidity. So it's ready to go whenever they get here. I plan to set them in the bator but turn the turner off for the first day.
I did a dry hatch last time and wonder if I shrink wrapped them, so I'm going to pay a bit more attention to the RH and maybe add a bit of water at day 18 and then be more careful with it.

I did a staggered hatch last time, didn't like it either. Unfortunately, this time one of my sellers waited an extra day to ship...grrrr. So they won't be arriving together.

I let my shipped eggs sit for 12 hours at the least, and 24 hours if the air cells are badly detached. I candled them the night I get them to check the air cells and then make my decision based on how bad the air cells are. On the worst ones I start them after the 24 hours and do not turn on my turner for another 3 days. I have read about not turning them for the first 7 days (did you read that on Deb's website "Heaven sent Ranch" about this?) but I have been afraid to try that. Sounds like it works, but guess I am just chicken

That's commitment!

Good luck with your hatch. I'm sitting on pins and needles, my eggs shipped out today. I'm expecting them before Friday, and I'm really hoping that I can force myself to wait a day and let them settle before I put them in the incubator....but that never happens! lol

If you can't stop yourself from setting the eggs, leave the turner off for the first 2 days. It may help repair any damaged air cells.

What color Orps are you hatching? I put some BBS in yesterday.

I think I read it on a document I googled lol I waited 6 hours then set the eggs in the bator with no egg turning till the 7th day I think I'll do that I don't even have water in the ice chest bator and it seems to be keeping humid quite well I also read to add water for raising the humid on the 18th day I think I will try doing that as well....I have another incubator with eggs in it but I got a feeling they ain't gonna hatch for some reason but it would be nice if I got a few hatches from it.

blarneyeggs, I'm hatching BBS Orps.

I'm going to leave them set over night before putting them in the incubator.

Just checked my tracking number and looks like I will be getting my eggs tomorrow!

I am leaving them sit until Saturday morning and putting them in the bator then.
