Who's Setting Eggs This Week[end]? [August 8-14]

Everything seems to going well. Bator holding temp and RH nicely. Trying to decide if I candle them early next week to weed out clears or if I wait to day 18 when I switch them to the hatcher. It's fun to look, but I'm wondering if I messed with them too much last time. When I was a kid, Dad never let us candle except at day 18, and I wonder if he was on to something.

I would go for day 14 if you were going to wait. I would worry about having a bad egg in there that could explode and ruin the whole batch.

New research has shown that a cool down time each day actually gives you a better hatch. Brinsea has already built a cool down mode into their new model of Octagon 20. It is like the hen getting off of the eggs each day for 10 minutes to eat and drink. That suits me jusssst fine since I am a candle-holic and candle my eggs almost every day, but I have the Octagon 20 with auto humidity control so after I candle the temp and humidity goes back up quickly. I do not take my eggs out to candle either. I have a Brinsea high intensity candler and shine it down through the tops of the eggs. It is a good thing to candle at least day 7/14/18 to be sure you don't have rotten eggs that can explode and contaminate your other eggs with bacteria and spoil your hatch

Just received six Lavender Orpington eggs. I am putting them in the brooder box in about an hour. I'll take some pics and post when I get them set up. My momma Buff has been broody for three days and I think she's going to do the job. YaaaaHoooooooo! Frankoo

I totally agree. I candle at least once a week from day 3. PS the best thing I have found for candling is an old slide projector, it works great.

I bought 16+ Blue Splash and Wheaten pure Ameraucana eggs on Ebay and a few (don't know how many til they arrive) White pure Ameraucana eggs from someone here on Backyardchickens. The BS/W ones have already shipped and should arrive Monday/Tuesday. I have a new broody so I want to put a few of the eggs under her and hatch the rest in my incubator.

How many should I put under my broody? This is her first time (and mine!), she is almost 9 months old.

I just picked up 2 slw and 2 bbs Wyandotte pullets, I also scored 4 slw hatching eggs (fresh from this morning) and am now enjoying a stinky ride home with poopy chickens in the back seat!

I'll be setting the eggs when I get home :)

I am glad things are going well for you after the upsetting, shipped egg disaster!

Yippee...my Showgirls showed up. Very pretty and nicely packaged. But then these are from a fellow backyardigan.

They are actually Silkies/SG but since I have 2 separate batches (all Silkies and Silkie/SG), I'm just referring to the 2nd batch as showgirls.

This is my first time with a bantam breed. They are so tiny compared to my Brahmas.

WRVgirl: So happy that you will still be hatching with us!

Personally I would be hesitant to trust eggs I spent money on, to a first time hen. I think I would place dummy eggs under her and try to sneak 3 or 4 babies under her at night after they hatch. Then you have a little more control in case she gets off the nest early,or whatever cause you never know with a new mom. But thats just me if you want to try it, good luck. There are a lot of hens that take to it like a duck to water

Ps. I love the warning sign!
