Who's setting with me Sept 1st-4th?

lol it hasn't gone off yet. Called the power company but they didn't answer. will call again in a little bit... along with the incubator I'm trying to work on my classes (all online this semester) so it's important I know these things (they are supposed to give you a call as a heads up but never do :/).

If the power goes out your eggs will be fine. However long your incubator is lower then normal temp will be how much longer it will take for them to hatch. I've incubated eggs in a shed before out at my moms and had a 3 day power outtage. I thought for sure that my eggs were goners. My dad plugged it back in when the power came back on, I had unplugged it thinking they were dead no point in going on. He wouldn't let me toss them. they all hatched 3 days late. Not one of them was effected by the outtage other then delayed hatch.

I candled today. Maybe 6 of the 12 are doing okay for now. I'm undecided on 2 since I can't see real well. 4 are doing very well so far. 3 have blood rings and 3 never started. How frustrating! Next spring I'm starting over, but buying straight from the breeders. I know this is not my fault in the dead/non developing eggs. I'm keeping them in there for 2 more days. Nothing smells bad yet.
Maybe this is a good thing since I'm hatching at an odd time of year.

I just checked the blood ring ones, it looks like only 2. I'm unsure if I'll have a 3rd.

I just candled mine too! All 4 green are developing and I know 1 brown it but I have no clue on the other browns. they have dark yolks but I can't see the veins in them because of their brown color. This might sound funny but I smelled each brown and they didn't smell like anything... so I guess I will just keep on rolling and see what happens.

Oh and power may be out tomorrow but the electric company assures it would be for very long at all since it's just one pole.

Yeah, I really use to think that if the eggs got cold they couldn't hatch. But apparently that doesn't matter to much. My dad explained it to me as the hen gets off her nest daily for the first 18 days for about a half hour twice a day. The eggs get cold during that time, so getting cold isn't a big deal.
Usually when they hook up new wire to a house they start at the house and don't turn off the power until they are ready to connect it to the live wires. So you're power really shouldn't be out more then a half hour to an hour.

I was reading the same thing earlier today, that eggs often go through a "cooling" when the broody hen goes off the nest for break time.

Yeah they said it wouldn't be very long when the turned it off so I'm not too worried anymore

Well, it's now day 4 for my Silkie eggs, so I went ahead and candled this morning. (couldn't help myself) Ten out of the seventeen are definitely viable. I can see the veining real good. The others show absolutely nothing at all, but am not giving up on them. You never know. I will leave them alone til at least day 10 (the 12th) and candle once more. Hopefully they are late bloomers, but I don't think so. Just a feeling I have.

How about everyone else? How are your eggs doing? Updates......

I just set mine yesterday, I found a good thread about what to do with eggs with ruptured air cells. I realize they have very slim chances of even developing let alone hatching, but I payed good money for these eggs, so I might as well try especially when 7 of the 12 are completely reuptured. It says to leave them alone, and not to turn until day 3 or 4. I'll candle at day 5 or 7 next week. I really hope these eggs work out. I'm glad your silkies are doing well! I love silkies, a friend gave me a couple of silkie eggs this spring and I hatched 2 of them, a black and a partridge and they are just so adorable with the big puffs on their heads, I can't wait to see them full grown. I really like the color of the one in your avatar!

OMG OMG OMG one has veins in it now YAY at least one of them is fertile. Another has no noticeable veins but i can see a lil eye ball looking thing and a lil red just below it.

not to add another LONG discussion.... but, my speckled sussex eggs should be coming off the 13th and 14th (2 different settings). today is the 6th and i've already received the start of my NEXT hatching ( 10 silver sebrights and 8 golden sebrights) 16 sebright eggs, and i have another 10 speckled sussex on the way. out of the last batch i only had 1 silver sussex to hatch (this thing is HUGE) out of 6 eggs and 3 silver sebrights to hatch outta 8 eggs. thus are the woes of shipped eggs. good thing i have a 2nd incubator to use as a hatcher/brooder.

Congrats on everyone seeing development! What wonderful news!

Don, good luck with your second hatch. I actually had a staggered hatch last time that was 5 days apart in the same incubator that was very successful! I did take the chicks out immediately after they hatched and dried them off and put them in the brooder under the light on top of paper towels.
