So true...I call my hens' home the Poop Coop.

Well honey, you send me a couple thousand dollars and I'll happily spend it on a brand spanking new coop and run fresh from the home improvement store.

Oh wait, no, if I had a couple thousand dollars I'd pay off the last bit of debt and be debt free!!!!! Why spend money on something you can get for free?

Me thinks someone just likes stirring stuff up.

I think there are some incredible "junk" material coops on this website.

There are some, that if a neighbor can see or is visible from the road that are eyesores at best. Yes the chickens are just going to make a mess on the inside and they might be predator proof as well.

BUT they are not ambassadors to the neighbors on the benefits of having backyard chickens. And it is that impression of the ugly pile of junk that many people are fighting with their communities to be allowed to have chickens by showing the coop does not have to lower everyone's property value.

Our old coop was so bad that I would never share a photo of it, our new coop did cost a couple hundred dollars. But we reused everything we could that was worth reusing-toss the termite eaten boards! Most of the inner frame was lumber from an old bunkbed. And we painted to be cute and attractive, so that the neighbors will not complain. It seems to me to better to stay friends with your neighbors than make them enemies because there view is of your ugly coop.

Once again, there are some incredibly nice recycled coops on this site to be inspired by!

Very true I have seen some coops that were built from all new materials that were eyesores but if i can reuse some lumber and still make something that looks good then i will
You should never put something up that would upset any reasonable neighbor

My "junk" run is on the back of the barn/garage ( you can see it on my page ) which is on the farthest part of our property. Nobody except my next door neighbors even know there are chickens...even when free ranging in the backyard. You can't see the run or the yard from the street. ....So why do I find myself trying to defend my use of recycled materials on this thread? I don't understand...I'm providing a safe home for my little flock, I enjoy BYC yet now I'm feeling pretty sad and not enjoying BYC right now.
