Why am I such a procrastinator?

I seem to live by the saying "why do today, what you can put off till tomarrow". I have about 3 weeks till I move and I haven't started packing yet. In college I always did my papers the night before they were due I'ld get about 4 hours sleep. Each time I vowed that I would do better. It never happened.

Thankfully I had four pages of it saved. I'm definitely going to be doing an all nighter tonight.

One way to stop procrastinating on your schoolwork is to shut down the web browser, the chat, and anything else you don't need to get your assignment done. ::hint (Why are you still here posting?)

Then, get a timer. Work for 30 minutes, then take a 10 minute break. Do another 30 minutes and then take another break.

Good luck on your assignment!

My son is in the same boat, and it's about to drive me INSANE. I have a sneaking suspicion that we're going to be in lockdown come report cards, but I'm not going to punish until the 'crime' has been committed. Two C's or One Failing and he's grounded until the next report card (possibly until the progress report at 3wks if he's at an A at that point) meaning no friends over, no going to friends' houses, no computer (except for homework), no video games, TV removed from room, and no karate classes. That part chaps me, since you have to give a month's notice or you're still responsible for tuition, but it's the one extracurricular he cares about so it has to be part of the punishment. And I told him that HE would have to explain to his instructor WHY he wasn't going to be in class for that time. Given how much he respects the man I know that that will not be easy for him. But, much better than getting into the habit of failing/barely passing being good enough. That won't be good enough for college entrance, and it certainly won't be good enough for scholarships. Hopefully this punishment plan is a moot point and will never be needed, but if it is I hope it will only take once to get the point across. *sigh*

Best Best Best of luck with your report. I've been there before, and don't envy you the stress. Be sure and double check it though. Inevitably when I rush I end up using the wrong to/too/two or the wrong Do/Doe/Dough or the wrong Knight/Night... etc. and spell check doesn't help at all since either spelling is still a word.

That's one thing that puts texters at a disadvantage. They use the shortest spelling of a word or idea to get a thought across so frequently that they forget what the correct usage is. Teachers, instructors and professors (especially) absolutely hate that. Its so easy to slip into writing slang when that's what you're accustom to writing all the time. I've frequently started texting to my kids in correct English just so they at least see it. I'm not sure if it'll make a difference, but it can't hurt.

silkieluver, how did the paper go?

Andi it's nice to see a kindred spirit!! Back when I did have a phone that could text I couldn't stand that shorthand stuff. I had to spell properly, and use proper punctuation, which lemme tell you is a HUGE pain when all the punctuation is the 1 key, with no back toggle. (anyone else ever 111111111111111111111 Oh Crap... 11111111111111111111, MWAHAHAHA ... or is that just me?) I've gotten a little better. IE I can use OMG and IMHO, I can say lemme instead of let me. Of course, I've actually heard people say OMG in a verbal conversation... that's just going too far.

Ah, I always seem to make the best threads on BYC when I need to procrastinate!

I can be pretty bad with it, although not as bad as I make myself seem. My room mate is much worse. I at least use time management and even though I sometimes do things the night before, I have usually planned to leave myself enough time to do them. In high school I think I was much worse, but in college I will think ahead and look in my little calendar. If I have something planned for a weekend and a paper due on monday, I try to write it thursday or friday. The only thing I really procrastinate on is studying for tests. I usually end up studying an hour before the test and somehow I still end up doing ok.

My room mate on the other hand, she'll start doing an entire PAINTING (as in, on a large canvas with oil or acrylic paint) the night before it's due. And not only this but she'll start the darned thing at 1 in the morning! Talk about stressful! She's gotten really lucky though. The few times she didn't have something finished, the professors gave her an extension. She'll also do the same for papers. I do have to say that her major procrastination makes me feel a whole lot better about myself though!

The paper did not go well, haha... I had it almost finished when my computer froze and deleted it even though I saved it multiple times. I turned in 8 1/4 pages instead of ten. Thankfully its only the rough draft so I can pull my grade up with the final product.
