Crowing
I started out my chicks in a gray plastic bin when I first started and had serious issues with temperature regulation and lack of proper ventilation with it, my chicks became much happier and healthier once I moved them to a pet playpen with plenty of air flow like this one: https://www.pawaboo.com/pawaboo-dog...ate-with-carry-bag-large-size-blue-khaki.html
I also think that overhead brooder lamps are better than radiant floor pads, and the more temperature stable they are, the better. I swear by this Brinsea EcoGlow brooder: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008HVM56Q/?tag=backy-20
I've raised two batches of chicks with this brooder/lamp setup with no problems and no losses. But I also get my chicks from a hatchery (Meyer), I don't really trust TSC's stock just because of how the chicks are kept in-store. No way can they get individual monitoring that way, which means weak and sick chicks are not going to get the attention they need in time to turn a corner. They get injured by trampling, the malformed ones don't get culled properly... I just prefer to get chicks elsewhere.
