I thought it had to do with back when people actually farmed for a living, and needed extra daylight hours in the summer...

Yup..thats what i've always known too..
 
Hawaii and Arizona by state law do not "artificially" change time as per the feds.
Just not natural...
High time that Texas did away with is as well!!!
