I know nothing about you! I was talking about people in general who have no real empathy for their dogs OR for their actions aganist others loved pets when they let them roam free. Its okay to disagree with each other..

Yep.

I am sorry about your turkey.

We know I am one of 'those' who lets their dogs roam. Far out in the country it is a common thing. You are frowned upon when you contain up dogs around here. Our neighbors play with our dogs, we play with the neighbors dogs. They even go horse ridin' with me. It looks like I am a dog walker on a horse at times....they all just fall in line for a walk. So, not everyone is irresposible dog owners just because they let dogs roam...I think I have had to try and explain this already today beacause some people apparently live in places where you can't do this so they assume people are stupid for doing it. I guess some just can't fathom the idea but would be in for a shock to really live out here at the way of life here.

I hope you find out who the dog belongs to and they replace your turkey:)

It's a good thing your dogs don't "roam" on my property.... nuff said there.

I appreciate you saying that but I felt that way....I was just trying to explain that in some places all people feel the way I do and we practice this with dogs....I just hate that people feel that way about people in general because sometimes it doesn't mean the people are irresponisble, it is the way we all do things. If I had neighbors that didn't feel the same as I do and neighbors that didn't want dogs coming by their place then I would have mine contained as the rest of the neighbors most likely would too. But we all feel the same so we all live like this, very happily. I guess I just hate to see others not perceive things the way they really are in certain places and I did feel attacked a little about someone thinking I am an idiot or have no empathy because of doing what is the norm here where I am from. Even the K-9 officer and deputy 2 miles from here free roam their animals. I too am sorry for feeling attacked and showing it though.

Well, I'm going to weigh in here.

Maybe I can get it across a little better.

In all the years that I've had people's loose dogs kill my livestock, I've only had ONE person offer to pay for the birds. The lambs I lost never were paid for. I lost more livestock to my neighbor's dogs than to coyotes hands down.

My attitude is that I don't raise and care for MY livestock just so YOUR dog can run in there and kill them.

When your dog is out of your sight, you can't guarentee what it will do. It's in a dog's nature to kill poultry, sheep, goats, ducks, etc, etc.

Turkeys have a lot of personality. EVEN if the owner of the dog replaced that turkey hen, it wouldn't be the same animal.

Its as if you lost a child. Yes, you can have another child, but it won't be THAT child.

I have dogs. They stay in with my sheep. (LGDs) I keep my dogs and livestock on my property. That's part of being a responsible animal owner.

Now, I'll tell you a little secret. We bought a farm 40 minutes away from where we have our sheep now. One of our neighbors had a pitt bull cross entire female. She came down to our farm to mate up with another loose dog a little further down the road. A few days later, she was back with a half-grown pup from a previous litter. She lay under some rolls of field fence growling at us. We had never had contact with this animal before. She did not go home. I fully expect to have problems with her offspring, as he looks like a shepard mix. The NEXT time I see him on my farm, he won't go home either.

I don't know where you live, chicks&horses, but if you are one of MY new neighbors, and you care about protecting your dogs, you'll keep them at home.

I have NO MORE PATIENCE with irresponsible pet owners.

I couldnt have said it better ...

I live out on the country.. I know how people let their dogs roam and dont care what they are into.
They are dead if they get on my property. I dont even care if they dont chase my animals. One paw on my property they are dead .If the owners are not smart enough to keep their animals off my property .. so be it. If they run free t in packs they are up to no good.

I have lost my patience long time ago with irresponsible pet owners.

The hardest part of this whole issue is that no matter what happens there are animal and human victims. I will never fault a person for doing what must be done to protect their pets and livestock. On the other hand I truly feel sorry for dogs with owners so irresponsible that they put the dogs life in danger. These dogs are not "BAD" but they do have bad owners.

For me personally having to kill a nice but out of control dog makes me really sad and angry even if it is the only practical solution. I can't help but imagine that it is one of my dogs. Easy to do since some of mine would kill all my poultry if they had the opportunity. They don't because I love them too much to give them the opportunity. Using an Obama bad word lots of pet owners act stupidly so both their pets and ours suffer greatly. Sorry for the melodrama but these incidents are over 90% avoidable so it really irks me.

ok i guess i can swing both ways on this, i have only threaten my neighbour across the street once about one of her dog being on my property and bugging my livestock..it helps that dh works for the sheriffs dept...... a few nights ago i found a small dog dead in my horse pen...my mare hate's dog's but i didn't know she would kill them...i knew who's dog it was.....did i feel bad that my pony killed it....yes....did i care that it was dead...no.......call me heartless but my livestock comes first, i have not put blood sweat and tears in this for nothing!!!.
let me ask you this....how come you can't shoot some one's pet but....you can let some idoits dog kill your pet?

My next door pain in the butt has 4 female cats that have all had litters. They all seem to like it on my property for some reason. May be the flock, I dont know. Anyhow my point is, target practice with SS .22's is great on kittens for when it comes time for larger predators. Im just saying.
