I remember there was this really nice waitress named Irma that worked in a restaurant that DH and I used to go to. She was from one of those former Russian countries, I can't remember which one. She was in her mid twenties and she was so nice. She was here legally on a work visa.
Well, she got in a car accident, and was underinsured, just the very basic insurance. She ended up paralyzed from the waist down and because she couldn't work she was deported. The government would not renew her work visa.
I remember the manager of the restaurant saying how sad it was, her father came to get her and bring her home and he was saying that their country was not a handicapped friendly place. He said she was destined to spend most of her time in her room because their house and area were not easily handicap accesible. When I heard this it broke my heart. Unfortunately she was already gone and there was nothing I could do for her by then.
