Why can't we all just get along??

I remember there was this really nice waitress named Irma that worked in a restaurant that DH and I used to go to. She was from one of those former Russian countries, I can't remember which one. She was in her mid twenties and she was so nice. She was here legally on a work visa.
Well, she got in a car accident, and was underinsured, just the very basic insurance. She ended up paralyzed from the waist down and because she couldn't work she was deported. The government would not renew her work visa.
I remember the manager of the restaurant saying how sad it was, her father came to get her and bring her home and he was saying that their country was not a handicapped friendly place. He said she was destined to spend most of her time in her room because their house and area were not easily handicap accesible. When I heard this it broke my heart. Unfortunately she was already gone and there was nothing I could do for her by then.

I wish there was an answer to the whole dilemma. Give it another 20 years and Mexico will be building a fence to keep destitute Americans out of their country. It takes on a new meaning when it's actually in front of you, doesn't it?

That is a very sad story

I believe that more "illegals" would become legal if they didn't make you jump through so many hoops to do it. Many people are against immigrants because they believe that they "take away" from those of us born here, or that they cause "more" crimes. Tell me what this lady is taking away from us when she has family here to take care of her (but only here), and she sure doesn't seem likely to be committing any crimes (I know I know, can't judge a book by it's cover, but bear with me.) If anything, we are committing the crime against her, and taking away from her by sending her to a place where she has no home or family.

For those saying we can't save everyone:

"One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, 'What are you doing?'

The youth replied, 'Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die.'

'Son,' the man said, 'don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?
You can't make a difference!'

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, '
I made a difference for that one.'"

They do make them jump through a lot of hoops.

I think most illegals want to return to their country eventually. They just can't make any money in their country of birth. Once they get ingrained in our society they don't want to leave it though.

The whole thing about illegals committing more crimes than Americans is ludicrous. Obviously there are some that are here just to transport drugs and such. Most are hard workers and want to stay off the radar. They don't do anything that will get them arrested and sent back.

I like your starfish story.

Thanks, I didn't write it, found it on a fish forum a few years back and fell in love with it. I use it all the time when people are like "there's too many to care" whether it's fish, puppies, or people, =P

I love the first line in your sig, it's hilarious

Nothing wrong with jumping through hoops. You SHOULD have to be able to read our language (ENGLISH!) and be able to communicate decently and be able to work and provide for yourself (legally). Nothing wrong with that. Look at the hoops folks have to jump to adopt a child- and yet ANYONE whos fertile can have as many as they want without anyone giving them so much as a second glance. No inhome visits for them, or proving they are good, decent people who are intelligent enough to raise a child.

Actually, (you can verify this online, snopes is a decent one to check facts) there are MORE illegals in our prison systems than anything else, and they account for more of the drug and murder crimes than any others. Our tax dollars pay for their incarceration instead of their deportation. Its just plain true, if you should choose to do any investigation into the real statistics.

As for the radar, yeah they wanna stay off it, because they are criminals! (if they are here illegally).

As for the injured and sick people who are deported... that sucks. Yes, I think if they are doing everything right, and have paid the same dues as everyone else, they should maybe get some kind of leiniency. BUT, maybe if enough of those people and their families get sick of their own countries treating them sooo badly, they will get off their A**'es and start a revolution in their OWN countries so they can get all the rights they think they are so entitled to here in ours. They come here because out country is supposedly so great, why should their countries NOT have to give their citizens what ours does? Because NO ONE does anything there- they just jump ship and come here. Its the easy way out for them.

Could you imagine going to THEIR countries and expecting or demanding the same benefits our country hands out? HA. Youd be laughed at and then sent right home, and no one here in the US would feel sorry for you.

The highest figure I could find anywhere was 27% of prison population are non citizen. Some are here legally and some aren't. So yes I did some investigation. 27% is somewhat less than the majority. If they have committed a serious crime they should be incarcerated. Deporting them is the same as setting them free in the US again. They'll be back 2 weeks after they go. The figures for actual illegals is around 6%.

Once again they like to work hard, save money and stay under the radar. If a lot of Americans had the same work ethic we wouldn't have so many of the other issues people complain about.

BTW the last US census indicates that in about 20 years we might have to learn Spanish. The Latinos will be the majority and they might just make the official language Spanish. What a hoot huh? I'm getting my Rosetta Stone. I want to be prepared. Adios amigo.

El español no es tan difícil de aprender.
