Why Chicken Cross Road? Don't know... BUT GET BACK IN YOUR COOP!!!

Here are the girls in their "natural setting" in the back yard:

They look like they're saying, "you know, I do adore the city life but honestly, there's no place like home"...

What if......

The top of the fencing leaned in. That way if they tried to fly up over it they would bump into in that come back down to earth.

Had to do that with a dog of mine. She would sqeeze through barbed wire on top of a 8ft fence and jump off. But chicken wire that leaned a bit at the top wasn't strong enough to support her weight when she climbed and she would fall off. If the dumb dog would have gone to the other side of the pen she could have gotten out. She would only climb the fence on the house side of the run.

Go figure.....

Pretty birds. My Shiner routinely flys out of the run (it will get the cover on the weekend) but has never gone over the three foot fence. I found her yesterday, out of the run, in the coop, laying her first egg. I wonder if all the escaping was about being where she needed to be. Yipee! first egg.

Well, yesterday two things happened that made me realize I need to make sure my girls don't escape anymore:

1) They've been getting progressively more and more brave. Another neighbor told me the chickens were out... but this time they were down the street (past the mailbox to the far right of this picture: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/2_chicken-road.jpg )

2) I heard my neighbor across the street trying to scare something out of her yard. Turns out it was my #1 escape artist hen who decided to eat / dig up my neighbors freshly planted flowers.
