Why did my always calm RIR rooster just attack me?

I went to let them out of the coop this morning and when i was throughing some corn out, he started spuring me! I did not want to hurt him so i just kept him back with my foot. When he finally turned his attition to a chicken, I turned to walk off and he came at me again! This went on for at least five minutes! I have two other roosters that stay in the yard, and when the RIR is out of the coop he is always chasing them. Maybe he was already aggravated.

You're first mistake was not using him as a football. YOU are the alpha in the coop, and he needs to know it. By just 'keeping him back with your foot' and walking out of the coop, you've just given him permission to do it again later.

Now as to why he did it, who knows. He's a chicken......

De Cahun is right. A good swift punting always make my tuff boy think twice. My nicer Black Orp Roo, Carlos is a pill. He THINKS he can get away with it. BUT, NO!! I'll chase his butt down, and grab him and squeeze him and hold him for a few mins rite infront of his girls. That is what they think their doing, is impressing the ladies. Don't let them get away with it. Your the Alpha male, even IF your a girl. Stick up for yourself, and NEVER get down to their level, or they'll think they can do it cause your weaker in their eyes. lolol

That makes alot of sense, thank you. But i sure dont want to hurt him, BUT, I have a two year old nephew that loves to walk among the chickens. And I will not take a chance of that rooster jumping on him! I will put my Blue Jeans on instead of my sleep pants ( I had them on this morning ), and me and the rooster will have this worked out real soon!

i've tryed the broom thing, its not very affective with hormone-filled cockrells lol

It worked! I walked out side and he came running. It took two good swift kicks and now he is running from me. Thanks for the info!
