why did the post office lady say this?

Wow, like they said, be SURE you open the box at the PO AND talk ahead of time to the Postmaster. They ALWAYS call me, like at 6am to tell me when chicks have arrived. And my PO told me that they COULDN't hold them ... don't know what's up with yours, but I'd get into see the Pmaster BEFORE the ship date. Ideal is great to deal with , but you sure don't want dead babies!

Good luck.

I have had only good help with lives shipped to me. The last bird I had shipped they called me from the station 100 miles away to let me know he was about to leave there and would be in Dothan in two hours. My P.O. always calls when they arrive. I usually call and let them know I am expecting them and they ask if I want to be called if they come in at 3 am or wait till 5 or 6.
I can't believe they have someone who hasn't dealt with the chicks before

I would do 2 things:

Educate her that chicks can only live at most 2-3 days unless they get food and water, and that is the reason this delivery is urgent

Also get the sender to label the box "live embryos", "call recipient immediately", "urgent pickup required" or something along those lines.

The post office in my town gives the birds away if they aren't picked up by the end of the day on which they arrive. Last summer they gave away a whole order of geese and ducks because they didn't want them to die.

What kind of idiot orders birds and then isn't around to pick them up? They said they'd called at least 5 times during the day. Heck, I'm always calling THEM to let them know an order will be arriving.

But now they have my number on file as someone to call if another order goes unclaimed. (I should be so lucky!)
