Why did you get your first chickens?

My grandparents got chickens first, and then the rest of my dads family got them too and then when we went over to visit we had their eggs and saw their chickens and decided we wanted some

I rescued my first chickens from a man who no longer wanted them, a rooster and hen Bantam Cochin pair. They were truly my pets, and would follow me around the yard. They lived a wonderful life, had lots of babies together, and sadly, passed away not too long of each other, (oddly enough, soon after our house burned down in '08). I still get misty-eyed when I think of Bruce and Henna....
We now have 17 acres, 31 tiny chicks and 1 Rhode Island Red Rooster. They keep us happy, and my 4 children all love to cuddle the chicks!

My grandparents lived on a farm and I would go visit them two weeks every summer. I love those days on the farm. Grandpa had just about everything under the sun as far as animals on his farm; chickens were there. Grandma and I would go out and get the eggs but I never really paid much attention to them. But I do remember grandma's scrambled eggs! I wanted to have safe and healthy as well as good-tasting eggs so I started with my first batch of chickens 2 1/2 years ago. Another one of those mass health issues had just happened with eggs where millions of eggs had to be destroyed. What a waste. I am surprised at how I have grown to love my gals and guys. The eggs are a bonus, the interaction with the chickens is priceless. I never realized how entertaining they are! I have lived out in the country with my property bordering Shawnee National Forest for 24 years. Don't know why I waited so long to get chickens! I am a chicken lady for sure now. My family and friends are just shaking their head, "she's gone nuts".

After seeing chickens at my friend's neighbor's house and haring her talk about them, I had started getting interested in chickens. For about a year and a half I constantly visited feed stores looking at the the baby chicks, and finally my dad promised me that if I recieved straight A's for the entire year that I could get chickens, and with him telling this to a C- student, it sounded very unreasonable, but I managed to accomplish my goal, and I am now very happy with my four chickens!

I always wanted chickens, especially after seeing all the cute babies at the grain elevator (where we got bird seed). 2 years ago on Easter, our good friend and neighbor brought home 6 little princesses. A gift from his mom. 3 for him and 3 for us. After watching one of the girls fall asleep cuddled up in my dh's elbow we were both hooked. 13 and counting now. :)

My very own first chicken was... White hen that I stole from someone's yard on the way home from school.
I know it sounds bad...
But I was young ( I was 1st grade I think ) and I thought I was rescuing the hen.
She was always at the person's yard, tied with rope on her leg. Rain or shine, she was there, tied with about 3ft long narrow rope.
I watched her everyday that her sad face.
So one day, I got scissors and cut her free and took her to my house.
The rope was tied so hard and it was ingrowing to her leg. Her leg was already started to rotten where the rope was tied. A few weeks later she lost her leg.
Now she got only one leg and hopping to move around.
I was attached to her so bad. Loved her and she loved me back, too. Loved her so much.
We spent a lot of time together. It's very sweet memory of my first chicken!
