Why do alot of people give away Roosters?

I ordered extra in case some died during brooding, as luck would have it all 33 chicks grew into a nice healthy strong flock. I ended up giving 4 hens and a roo to a family who wanted to have some birds. Two more I gave away after putting posts at the local feed stores and TSC. So now I have 2 roos to 23 hens. I also have one cochin roo but he doesn't count.

we (and by that i mean my wife, without my knowledge) ordered 40 chicks, 12 ducks, and 5 geese this year. we got shipped 42 chicks (lost 1 a few days in) and were left with 41 chicks to raise.

out of that 41 we ended up with 20 hens, and 21 roos. 9 roos have already been processed and sent to the arctic camp. we have 7 more caged and fattening up to be processed.

as for the ducks and geese, there are 5 ducks to be processed, and it looks like we will be processing at least 3 geese, as the 5 she ordered straight run ended up 5 females! go figure.

processing them is not as bad as one thinks. my wife and kids help. rather than going by age, we go by weight on when to process. you lose about 2 pounds in the processing, so we usually wait until they are at least 7 pounds live before processing.

We used to process ours but by the time they get enough meat on them to bother with they are too tough for anything other than a stew..We raise Cornish for dinner and first sell the roos that will sell then all the extras we give away and let someone else stick all that feed into them.
Don't assume your roosters will fight..we have lots of roos living together at all times..we don't have any more than a small squabble-hens tend to squabble worse than the roos.

Ok I will post a picture of it in a little bit. I really don't want to give it away ( I know I have to though) because I have really grew close it..... I have taught it some tricks, like when I tap on something it will fly up to it. It also comes to me when I call it by name... I guess I might just give it to a home (if its a Roo) that will take care of it. I will probably buy more chicks but the FIRST is always the best ( in my opinion). Thanks for the help everyone! I'm gonna take a picture of it so I can post it here.

I guess it depends on why you got bird's to start with .Pet's/Egg's? Can you keep roo's where you live?.I've had to give a away quite a few roo's over the year's but some season's I raised Hundreds of bird's also.Too many roo's with a smaller number of hen's is not good.I just sold 2 this past weekend and still have about 8 or 9 to go yet.3 silkie's,2 black sexlink 2 red pyle game and 2 bantam columbian wyandotte. And those are just my on the ground bird's!I don't eat my bird's so..I have to sell or rehome mine.

Its about 6-8 weeks old now. I just got it from a farm so I don't know the breed. So is it a Rooster or Hen? And what does "comb" mean?
