Why do eggs get abandoned? Are eggs ok?

I can't pick up tonight, but since my husband takes our car to work, I was going to try to get a ride to pick them up before he gets out of work in hopes that they won't have poked (pipped) through the shell yet. I'm not sure if I can though because every one I know works during the day as well.
