Why do people re-open ancient threads?

I bet part of the reason why is that sometimes people are told to not start a new thread but to search through the old ones. When I've searched they aren't sorted by date order or anything so people may not even be looking at the date.

This exactly.

When I do a search, believe it or not, you get OLD threads in the first few topics and either you can get informed choices or have BYC webmaster find a way to bump up the newer threads or threads in listed in order BY dates.

I get this all the time and its work for me to find newer threads.

As for the updates on old threads, I think it is neat to see updates! We all remember it and it gladdens my heart to see a problem being resolved or some updates about a court matter. Examples would be SpeckledHen's threads OR that palomino thief thread...man it was some FINE reading!

You can choose to sort your search results by recency or relevancy. If you sort by recency, it will show the newest posts first. Also, you can do an advanced search and tell it you only want to see threads with answers within a certain time frame - for example, the past two weeks. That will eliminate all of the old threads.

So what! I find that I that I learn a lot and enjoy reading some those older threads posted that are brought up by someone doing a search on a particular topic. and Oh yeah this below too LOL

Well, when the new post is guessing the gender or breed of a chick that is now three years old, it seems pretty ludicrous. Likewise, when the thread is an old one about something related to the appearance or breeding of a particular bird, and the new post throws in a new photo and asks a question about THAT bird that really is not quite the same as the original question (basically hijacking the thread and taking it in a direction that is not quite what the thread title indicates), I see a problem. In the first case, the bird could be long gone; heck, its owner may not even be on BYC any more, and if they are, may not recall that particular bird. In the second, why didn't the person start a new thread with a relevant title. I have absolutely no problem with actual updates to old posts, or requests for how something was resolved. If the thread was about dealing with a particular type of predator and someone has a relevant question to a similar current problem, I can see posting in an older thread.

My annoyance is when there is no reason for posting in an old thread. Quite frankly, I see very little of the admonishment against asking questions.

Some of us like to discuss certain subjects. I revive the big foot thread about every month or so. I also like to revive the Spanish language thread ever so often. You never know who or what will come up in these threads. If that offends someone, they don't have to read the thread.

And then some of us are just a little senile.

Agreed. Though, I must admit, I avoid `true' Ameracuna bloodletting threads  Incivility is not always implied by brevity.

Search function is excellent (into the millions of posts indexed IIRC). If i don't know the answer or have any earthly idea I'll always default to suggesting search (there HAVE been ARE and WILL BE knowledgeable, funny and sometimes pofound members of the board whose thoughts can be queried at 03:00 when no one else is around).
