Why Do SSS

Well then maybe you'd be one of those people who get the courtesy of an explanation. But for me, it's not a courtesy in all cases. Personally, if I told my neighbor htat I shot their dog, it wouldn't be to be nice.

But from your post, I think people would be more tolerant to you and a one-time dog outing. I know I would, but everyone is different. I personally refer to dogs that attack, not those that simply wander. And more specifically, those who continue to come back. Again, I might be in the minority, who knows?

Just think on this: if you and your children come knocking on someone's door asking about their dog, they may consider your children and NOT say anything. Personally, I might take you aside and tell you if you came to me as you describe above. But you know what? the kids already know their dog is gone. They don't need to know the details imoho - there are tons off reasons that the dog doesn't come back and many reasons why he/she met his demise. If the dog wandered onto the highway and got hit by a car, who would be to blame in that situation? You'd still never know and the dog would still be gone. The dog could have gotten attacked and killed by something bigger and meaner. Again, you'd never know. So why is this any different?

I honestly don't mean to be curt because I see that you're a reasonable person and love your dogs as much as I do, but the claims that the livestock owners should/must tell the dog owners when they have shot wandering dogs AGAIN puts the responsibilty of caring for that dog on the shoulders of the livestock owners, and not the dog owner. Why does the chicken owner AGAIN have the burden of reponsiblity in some peoples' eyes? When will the dog owners be accountable? Why is it always the chicken owner doing the 'right thing to do' and who establishes the right thing? IMOHO, it's the dog owner's responsiblity to own up and say to his/her child: "I'm sorry, I screwed up, he got out and I don't know where he is. He may never come back but if he does, and in the future, we will take better measures to keep our dogs confined."

It's really up to the dog owner to know the whereabouts of their dog. We all have enough responsibilities caring for our own animals. When one's animals get out, that animal's owners are responsible for them, not the rest of the world. I won't be burdened by careless neighbors, crying children, or neighbors with caustic personalities because of someone else refuses to own their mistake/neglect. The dog owner who allowed their dog to get out (by mistake or on purpose) needs to bear that burden.

Some people have claimed on this thread that I'm wrong to not extend that courtesy, but respect is a two way street. Respect is not something that can be demanded, it is something earned. Someone's loose dog already caused drama for the person who had to shoot it and now has to care for injured livestock or pets. Now it's the dog owner's job to pick up the slack and own it.

And the fact that this thread has attracted a troll that acts like my neighbirs is a perfect reason why people SSS and just don't deal with it.

Please, do not kill a bird of prey. I have lost a good number of chicknes to these guys, yet I refuse to kill them.

Remember, chickens are natures snack and that is just the was it is.

I protect my flock as much as i can, but a bird of prey is not wasteful nor does it kill for sport (like a dog).

I do shoot a shotgun in the air and scare them off, but this is darn near futile.

i have barn swallows, crows and Adult Guineaa in or near the flock.

I have several very large roosters and they even warn the girls.

I have vultures that constantly patrol my property and I welcome thier presence.

You are going to loose a baby to a hawk and you need to remember that they are only doing what they do best.

Learn to identify the hawk species in your area and keep a log of when you see them. This way you can watch for them if you feel inclined to do so.

SSS (shoot shovel and shutup) is reserved for animals that keep offending your flock. I do not think twice about a possum or a skunck. i have a problem with coons as the wife will not let me kill them. We trap them and take them to a taxidermist where they are humanly done in and mounted for profit.

You all know my position on a repeat offending dog. I really do not think I need to repeat myself. i do not even use a shovel.

Yup .. just like EVERYONE on this board..We are all heartless gun totin` people who wish nothing else than having some persons dog that he cannot keep on THEIR property show up on ours and then kill it, and then hide it because we all have nothing better do to and we have no balls.
