Couple of things pop into my mind..... if you SSS (shoot shovel and shutup) the man won't be insulted because he doesn't know...... no court fees because they don't know and their kids wouldn't be upset because they don't know...... SSS stands for more than just shooting a dog.
Sounds like your situation would be perfect for SSS if there are problem neighbors....... This is what happened to a BYC member when she tried to get a dog in attack mode? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=181285&p=1
JJ is going through physical therapy now.
The kids would know their dog was gone.
I am just thinking about how much time I would spend looking for my dog and wondering about where he is; posting ads, calling the humane society, etc. If someone shoots my dog and is within their rights to do so, at least let me know so I don't go crazy with worry. I am not perfect - my dog gets out now and again. I think it would be a tad harsh for someone to just shoot him and not bother to own up to it.
But then, I would never shoot my neighbor, burn his house down, kill his animals, etc.
Each case is different. I don't think there is only one answer here. I just know how I would feel if my dog suddenly disappeared.
