I don't know *legally* what the deal is here, but I do know that the common feeling around here, with news crews, etc, is that dogs have more rights than kids do in this city.

If someone shot a dog, for whatever reason, they'd be in trouble. We had someone who killed a dog who was attacking a little girl (almost killed her) and had to defend himself from all the people who got up in arms about it... sick.

In my area if it is pursuing, harrassing or killing livestock you can shoot it... But it is ILLEGAL to remove it's tags. Go figure huh?

Our county policy is that "dogs at large" can be shot if harassing/attacking/killing livestock. We're supposed to contact animal control after such an event happens so they can make a report and come pick up the animal.

My neighbor's dog got into my chickens last week and killed 6. Knowing whose dog it was and that it hadn't done this to ours before (it had killed some of their own), we attempted to catch the dog to take it back to them. Dog tried to bite us--owners were not home--dog then proceded to chase cats--so bye-bye doggie.

Called the sherriff out to make the report (it was after hours). The sherriff was quite snotty with us over what we had done and why couldn't we had done something else, blah, blah, blah....

(The neighbors actually ended up being not bad in the end)

We've also had other dogs who've haulded back to their owners (alive), told them their dog was chasing our chickens, and have had the owners be very crappy to us (like it our fault their dog runs loose?)

So that's why, from now own, we will most likely go SSS

Well, this is not a criticism of other people and what they feel they need to do to keep themselves and their animals safe. I'm just saying from my perspective, for me, it would be unethical to shoot someone's pet and then try to cover it up. If I feel guilty enough or fear the consequences too much to be upfront about it, then I shouldn't be taking that particular action. I should seek out a different solution.

TN has the law to protect yourself and your lifestock if the predators are chasing, killing or worrying your animals.
Plenty fo times we use the SSS method around here. If the owners are not worried where their dogs are roaming , I am not worried that they will come looking for them. And if they do come and ask me.. I am within my rights to dispose of said animal. Nothing they can do if I am able to prove they have killed my lifestock. We have a leashlaw here.You feed a stray dog , you assume ownership and are liable to replace my lifestock..simple.

Now protected species are a different story.They get left alone.Not going to jail for a hawk or an owl.So far we had no problems .. knock on wood.
