Why Do SSS

So many good reasons for SSS when dealing with dog predators.

Nope, your comparison doesnt fly here. Dogs are not endangered or a protected species. And just tagging a dog doesn't absolve its owner for letting it off his property. I see that all the time where I live--someone finds a stray and puts a collar on it, then just allows it to keep roaming and come home to eat. That's hardly responsible ownership.

Nor do I believe does yours Speckled hen- if you shoot someones dog the responsible thing would be to notify them. I give you that in a few cases it might not be prudent hence SSS, but for the most part its cause we don't want to own up to what's been done and hide behind the other reason. Keystonepaul

For the record, I made no comment about SSS in this thread. I was making the point that just putting a tag on an animal doesn't mean it's legal or illegal to kill it, just that it has no meaning in this discussion. I think you've made your opinions perfectly clear, Paul.

I see what yall are saying but here is my thoughts on SSS:
If I see a wild animal (other than BOP ) attacking my livestock= dead
Now, if a domestic animal is in my yard not bothering my livestock then I will try to let the owner know (if I know who owns said animal). If I don't know the animal, i will try to just run it off. If a domestic animal, known or unknown, is attacking or harassing my livestock, they will be shot. If I know the owner I will let them know. Now about contacting the owner: if the dog/cat had an ID tag, i would call and let them know. If no tag, i'm not going out of my way to search for the owner of the dog/cat. If I'm asked about it, I will gladly tell them the truth, but I'm not going out of my way. I also understand the third "S". What ever works best for you. Each situation is different.

How do I find out the statute on harrassing dogs? There are a few that have demolished my chicken run numerous times. I'd love to get them legally.
