Why Do They Kill Birds?

Mine chase robins. I think they just do it to steal the robins food though, because as soon as the robin drops whatever it is it caught they grab that and leave the robin alone.

Sorry folks, but if you look in your Petersons birds of North america or similar reference, right beside vultures, hawks, eagles, and falcons, YES you will find grouse, ptarmigans, pheasants and all those other close friends of ours.

I am probably violating the ancient hippy code here but what the heck it's 2011; If you wish to make a stiff deer hide into a piece of useable leather?

Peg it out so the chickens can strip off all the flesh, and poop on it. That part is important.

wash, dry.

put it under the bedsprings of newlyweds for 6 months.

sheesh

A baby goldfinch fell out of it's nest and my hen was on it before I could move, she ran around the yard, with 5 others playing keep away and snatch the prize for half an hour...and now, I just can't look at them the same

our girls have mauled frogs and toads that have gotten into the run with them we dont have any poisonous species its just gross to look at the parts strewn around

Although I have not seen my chickens eat anything besides feed, grass, and treats, I really don't think there is anything gross or disgusting or even unnatural about them eating other animals. It's a dog eat dog world--or in this case bird eat bird--and, stripping it of sentimentality, we are all just food, after all.

My chickens will eat any small animal they can catch. In fact, if I hear them clucking wiht alarm, I go out to see if they have a snake - So I can save it's life! Yes, thats right - I don't want them killing snakes. But they really will kill baby birds, rodents, lizards, amphibians, beetles, etc.

Some folks were complaining about the havoc cats do on wildlife on another , but they convenently ignored me when I mentioned that chickens are not always so "eco-friendly" themselves. I'm glad someone else is pointing this out.

i had a nasty leghorn who i once saw go after a wren i was watching take it's first flight. i was able to take it from her and put it back in the nest before she hurt it. a little before that i found another fledgling wren with a broken wing. i always assumed it was the cat's doing but now i wonder....

my other chickens eat mice but that and bugs are about it

Edit: oh and sometimes small frogs too....

LOL my girls are deadly little raptors too! I keep finding stripped skeletons of little critters that came into my yard while my girls free-range. They even have their own 'get it!" cluck for sparrows. RHRanch, I agree with you, moaning about feral cats killing small creatures while owning a flock of chickens is a bit silly. Besides, either group takes care nuisance animals that carry disease, invade your home, and or eat your feed. Good riddance!
