Why do they like this particular spot so much?

I'm no chook expert, but from my observations, definitely. I'm sure my girls hang around outside the door because they want to come inside. They'll definitely march in if I leave the door open (the auto-closer is broken at the moment). It could be because they are flock animals and want to join the rest of "their flock", chum up with everyone else in their household.

Also, your girls are very young and they've just joined your household. They could be thinking that you/your cat are their "mum" and trying to stick close to "keep safe". They should develop more independence as they get older (hopefully :D - just get used to the chooks doing all sorts of weird and wonderful things that'll have you scratching your head".

Hahah yeh they definitely have me scratching my head! As long as they won't bully the cat I don't mind. You might be right about them thinking we're their mums. Yesterday they saw me looking out the upstairs window and got a bit upset and started chirping at me. I don't think they liked me being so high up and far away, I don't really know. I'll go sit with them in the garden later when it's a bit warmer outside.

They surprise me every day but the biggest surprise so far is how clever they are. I really did not expect that :D

As flock animals, it is normal for them to be "sociable". They probably had lots of other chook "brothers and sisters" at the farm, it's a big change to come down to just a few of them.

(They're awfully cute, btw. I bet puss doesn't agree :D)

I expected them to be scared of the cat or at least keep their distance. Never knew chickens can be so cheeky!

I know, they're so adorable, I could watch them all day (which is what I do most days anyway :D ). When they chase the flies around the garden wiggling their little fluffy chicken butts my heart melts!

Funny!
You might want to fence off the area to keep the birds away,
they will eventually end up in the house.

What struck me most is the cat door in a glass door...how'd they do that!
Not a DIY job, I wouldn't think.

A family member does things like that for a living and put that in for us for free :) that's why the cat flap is so high up, he said it can't
You have to swap over the entire pane of glass - they cut the hole at the glass shop and bring the cut pane to your house.

That's right! Quite pricey normally I think. We were lucky because a family member does these things for a living so we got it for free.

Yes, I had one put in a full-sized glass window (next to a sliding door). The expense was quite high (but worth it, IF your cat doesn't have a chook sentry stopping them using it :D) because it's tempered safety glass and the labour of fitting adds to the cost. You were REALLY lucky to get your family member to do it and not be up for the cost.

What's on the outside there? Could you add a cat run/tunnel or is it needed for people access?

I agree with earlier posts - your chooks like the idea of coming inside because they see the cat in privileged luxury...and are a bit envious.
No doubt they envy the cat his food as well.
You might find the chooks eating cat food and the cat trying to eat chook food (though I think cats are perhaps too sensible for that).
We had a rabbit once who stole the dog's bones and gnawed on them while the dog sat next to him munching away on the rabbit's broccoli and lettuce leaves.
