I have always had someone else butcher my chickens for $1.40 each, bags are 10 cents extra. I have been considering doing it myself, but didn't like the idea of hand plucking. I recently found someone who will let me borrow their plucker. I was still a little hesitant, but after reading this section I am going to try it myself. I think it is a great point about being self sufficient and teaching kids as well. Our kids are getting an understanding about where food comes from already with the garden and having layers. I guess having them help butcher will just further their "rounded education" about farm life and self sufficentness.
Thanks Milliemay for your inspiration. I have about a dozen extra roos that need butcherered next week (they'll be 20 weeks) and I am going to try it out and see how it goes.
