I don't have chickens... yet, but when I mentioned to my brother yesterday that I was thinking about getting some he said "Aw, geez (insert eyeroll here)" My response was "Yeah, I don't have enough crazy around here...."

I think that was better than my previous explanation of " Because I can't have elephants..."

I have them as pets! I am a teacher and we hatch chicks and ducks every year. Last year by surprise I had a couple bantam cochin and bantam silkie eggs and fell in love with them. They were so sweet, people friendly...so now I have them as pets. Sit in my lap, love to be pet and are quite the characters!!!!!

Mostly for eggs and pets. My Dominiques and EE pullet act just like my cats and dog; always wanting to be in my lap or begging for food. My parents had chickens growing up. Both my maternal and paternal grandparents grew up on a farm, my paternal grandma still has hers. My aunts have chickens and ducks. Guess I'm following in the family footsteps; however, they treat their chickens like livestock and I treat mine like a pet. Plus, there are some really beautiful breeds out there, and I can't wait to show my niece the blue and green eggs EE's lay. I can't keep roosters, so my dad or grandma will butcher them for meat. They provide good manure for my garden, and can keep the insect population down.

I have lots of animals and I guess it is to fill the void in my heart from not having kids yet. Been trying for about 5 yrs and still hopeful but all in Gods time. Anyway my chickens bring pride and joy that only other "chicken people" understand. My husband lovingly tolerates my chicken obbsession and dutifully helps me care for them. He likes them when they a little peeps but after that not so much then he thinks they are just stinky birds :) Most of my family doesnt get it either. Does anyone else on here get called a "crazy chicken lady"? I love to watch them interact with one another and see them grow and change and fit into the flock. They are my babies. Eggs are nice too I sell a few doz a week but I would keep them all even if I never saw another egg.
