Why Do You Have Turkeys? What Kind Do You Have?

How did that cross turn out? I thought about trying that cross too. Can you give me info on growth rate or carcass type? How much faster are they than the straight holland? Do they get a meat type body from the BBW? Do the offspring have issues with mating like the BBW?

I thought they did nicely. Like the best of both worlds. They had fast growth without growth problems. Over all they looked like broad breasted turkeys. I never saved any for breeding. They all went into the freezer. Maybe next year, I will save some for breeding. I know the broad breasted turkeys of the 1930-50's where able to breed. Its only after they got them so darn big that they could not breed anymore. They just need a little down sizing.

I got into turkeys because I thought the heritage strains looked neat. We raised laying hens and meat birds for several years and i wanted to try something different. I built a brooder and fenced off an area for the turkeys to range in to keep them away from the chickens and to keep away the bobcats. I sit with them all the time. I love the noises!

5 Narragansetts, 3 Bourbon Reds, 3 Royal Palms, 2 Standard Bronze, and a White Midget...for now. I am planning to breed for Golden Phoenix

I just love them. I have Midget Whites, Blue Slates and Royal Palms. 26 turkey's running around.

We sell eggs and poults, but I just LOVE to watch them strut.

I only have 1 turkey that I got from a friend... A bourbon red poult. I think turkeys are actually pretty cute, and I'm always intrigued by their personalities. Hopefully she's a girl, as I think she is, so we can have some big turkey eggs.

I only have one too, she is a bourbon red and her eggs are not at all big. They are about chicken size.

We started off with 2 WBB, but one got killed. We have one left.

His name is Christmas (Thanksgiving got killed).

My son wanted them. Next year we might have a few more.

I have a RP hen named Christmas and a tom named Thanksgiving. I loved the color of the RP and wanted to be able to help preserve a threatened breed. I am also hoping to raise some for meat for my family.
