why do you keep chickens?

Mine are pets!! We do eat their eggs, but when they die, we plan to give them a proper burial, not turn them into dinner!

I raise mine as pets and I sell the eggs This is my first time having chickens and I have to say...I LOVE THEM! as does my Dog JD Those are really HIS girls! I have 8 so far and they all have names (Chickira, Chick Eastwood, Cluck Norris, Baby, Lola, Princess Laya, Henrietta, & Clucky). Mine stay between the coop/run area and free range when I am home. I do not have a rooster. I am thinking about getting a few more girls because I love to watch them run around and I love to see JD play with them. Chick Eastwood and Baby are thick as thieves and they are both JD's little babies, they follow him everywhere he goes

I have a columbian rock named Henrietta. Mine all have names too, except for two reddish colored brothers that i'm giving away. I've got Henrietta, Napoleon, Hailee, Lindsey, Lucy, Bantam, Lilly, Peaches, Sophia, Christina, Grace, Hope, Coral, Blossom, Estello (used to be Estella until i found out he wasn't a hen), the two Red Brothers, and Kindle (named after a person, not the electronic!). Napoleon is the top guy and the other roosters are getting given away as soon as possible. I like your names!

No i have not. I have considered it, because i really hate sending them off to certain deaths, but they would be all expense as they would just consume feed and not lay eggs. I am not going to raise meat birds because i love chickens so much i wouldn't be able to kill them.

I haven't gotten around to selling eggs. I just give them away to people at church who aren't fortunate enough to have fresh eggs every day. The kids at church love my Bantam eggs, they call them dipping eggs.
