As far as a "gaurd bird" goes Guineas do not necessarily "watch" a flock of chickens. They do have their own agenda and many times they are away from the flock in their groups doing what Guinea Fowl do.
However, if you get enough of them, they usually will split up into different "groups" and most of the time they will be around your flock.
They are WONDERFUL watch dogs. They do alarm at danger and in time your flock WILL come to recognize that they are sounding off for a reason. Guineas will NOT attack a hawk, but they are are on constant look out for anything wrong on your property. They talk to each other on a constant basis and when one sees a problem they ALL go to alarm mode.
I have watched and heard mine sound off and I am out the door. Many times it is just something they did not like, but they have saved quite a few of my flock from hawks as they all run for cover.
