He's mature now, and sees you as a threat to HIS hens, thus the attacks. A rooster's job is to protect and service the flock. It's not about him being "mean" it's about aggression, and he's started being aggressive with you. It will probably continue with you, and with others, including small children, and other pets.
Our rooster, who was coddled and loved as a chick, and my absolute favorite, turned into an aggressive A-hole. We tried everything, but when he began flying into the rabbit run, and attacking our sweet bunnies, plus our geriatric cat, and after I'd had to raise my blood pressure meds TWICE, I'd had enough.
It took months of flyers and ads to find an experienced Chicken Whisperer with 40 acres and a million hens who could handle his antics. Try to change your roosters behavior now, but have a Plan B in place, just in case. Best of luck!
ps
Mine was an Easter Egger, and smart as fox -- he could fly over 8 foot fences, and balance along a wire, just to sneak up, and attack me from behind when I wasn't anywhere near him or the hens! I'm surprised he wasn't running a scam by taking the SAT's for kids, he was that smart. Bastard.
