Why does their arse pucker!?

My uneducated guess. When the bird makes any sound, the diaphragm contracts as it pushes air from the lungs to produce sound. As the diaphragm contracts, it increases pressure in the abdomen which signals the sphincter muscles to contract so as to prevent any accidental release of intestinal contents.

There you go.

Nurse turtle, that was so literal it kinda made me laugh. I for one had no idea why they do it.

I remember when we first got chicks, my daughters and I were doing a "pasty" check. I had one chick while my girls were inspecting another one. I asked them what that one's butt was doing and at they same time they said, "Peeping!".

I about fell over laughing.

All I know is that if it stops...then the chicken is no longer living. Maybe it is a reflex.

Google 'chicken diaphragms' (chickens don't really have a complete diaphragm) and read University of Kentucky's article about chicken anatomy. This is an easy read and I want a 250 word report on why chickens flex those rectal muscles so well!

My girls are either too fluffy back there or always moving, so I never noticed. But cats certainly seem to be active back there, and are much more interested in winking in our faces with it.
