Why ducks?

i love duck eggs!!!! And they are so fun to watch waddle around and the likds love them too!!! They eat lots of bugs!!! I say go for it!!!!

Ducks have HUGE personalities and are very clever. They act like everything they do is fun and of great importance. They have a real zest for life, and don't EVER wimp out about bad weather like chickens tend to.

They are great for entertainment. Ducks tend to play by themselves and with their buddies...a quality that many chickens seem to lose as they mature.

*My ducks LOVE it when I fold a tarp, which I use to help cover open mesh spaces in their coop door in winter, over into a tunnel or cave shape. The girls will all bunch around it, and the bravest one that day will start making a quacking sound that they never make otherwise, and walk slowly into the dark tunnel. Then, the other girls and boys gather around and listen to how funny the duck in the tarp's quack sounds, and they get all excited. The duck in the tarp eventually starts quacking really fast and wagging her tail, and will come running out of the tarp talking to her friends about it. They all get really excited.

Then, they go back over and try it again. It's hysterical.

Pekins were also bred to be huge egg layers. The babies are adorable! And they are a very hardy bird to incubate and raise.

They also have amazing personalities, which is why I love them. haha.

Because all of the above! I have had mine for just a month now and am completely addicted to them. My husband wasn't "keen" to the idea, but I got them anyway. He probably won't admit it, but he really likes them. They are completely entertaining and fun to watch. Summer should be lots of fun! Hopefully eggs by July!! I think their eggs are better than chickens. You can see my last 4 weeks of ducks on my website if you need more nudging

If you get muscovies you good great lean meat, good broodies for large chicken eggs, they dont need a pond(mine are happy with a 5 G bucket) and they are QUIET!!!!! plus mine keep teenagers and kids out of my backyard.

Yeah people around here in the city all have pitbull type of dogs, well a lot of them do, but they dont have ducks. However they know how cranky the local canadian geese population can get, so they dont take chances. Little do they know that mine just want some boil noodles.

Vent sexing...but I don't know how to do that.

Other than that, you have to wait about 4-5 weeks. That's when their voices change. Girls start quacking but boys get raspy voices.
