Why Extra Nesting Boxes

I have three nesting boxes and 11 impatient pullets...

In one building I have 7 hens and one nest. They pace a lot but it is a big nest and sometimes 2 at a time will use it.

Well, currently I have 12 nest boxes for 12 hens (in the Spring and Summer those numbers change). They use 1 box, 1! Very occasionally I'll find an egg in a different box, but its rare. I have a broody parked in "the" box right now, do they use a different nest? Of course not, they climb in right on top of her and do their business! And she's mean, so I don't enjoy having the check under her everyday
