Why me????????????????????????????????????????

Always just say you're only curious. Never tell them you're thinking of chickens. Just ask for a copy of the ordinances regarding farm animals in your community.

Good luck with you situation.

I'm in a slightly different circumstance where we are allowed to have up to 3 backyard pets. We already have two rabbits, and I am adding two hens. Rule #1 broken. I'm also putting the coop/run right next to our house (versus 20 feet away by code). Rule #2 broken. But at least the run is at least 10 feet away from the property line and 20 feet away from the neighbors house (within code), so I'm hoping that if I keep a low profile it all goes well.

It can be very stressful when you are concerned about what someone is going to do to you, but I hope that in the end you are able to get your chickens and enjoy them for a long time.

BTW, I understand its 3 for a standard size lot and then additional for x amount over that, and what is a standard size lot?

Sorry to cut in, but dave and I are under the same laws and I cant find where its posted.

The government stinks, they want to control everything.... Can you build a coop and just say it's a tool shed or something. How many chickens are you planning on getting? We live in the country and unfortunatley in the "Oak Ridge Moraine" territory, and the officials are always going around making sure nobody is building anything they shouldn't. But you are allowed to build a certain size shed without a permit, and I don't think you should have a problem where you are with chickens( especially if you have neighbors with barking dogs). Do some more checking around, but try not to say exactly where you live( you may be able to get away with some things, just don't tell a whole lot of people what you are planning on doing;)). I can see it if you lived in a busy neighborhood, but geesh, you should be able to have some chickens where you live.

You see, in this situation, if it was me and I lived in a subdivision, I wouldn't have called to see if chickens were legal - I would've been a little chicken rebel and snuck my chickens into my backyard, coop and all.

Hi Radical53 -

If it makes you feel a bit better, I did the sneaky thing and got a coop then waited for my chicken order without checking town rules first (screw em I say it's my property, I pay hefty property taxes where I am) Then I went searching the internet for town laws, and I can have up to 4 hens, no roo. (noise) But my neighbors don't even know I have them! There's something about being sneaky that I kinda like, I'm wondering how long it will take for anyone to notice! My chickens are kept very clean, If anyone has a problem with it they can send a health inspector over and check em out. But I would fight with anyone trying to take mine away!

In essence, I say go get them and enjoy them, but very quietly!

Jackie- that is a great idea i will phone back and request a list of bylaws for research on a er um...... speach

Chicka Chicka- you are definetly correct it is stressful. To get around the pet number thing you could build a small cage in your basement for the rabbits (you don't ever need to use it) and were they are outside you can just say they are out there to be outside to get some fresh air but they really live in the basement. Maybe that will work i don't know?

Birdlover- it's great that you can get away with it:D i am in an even better situation as i said already i only have 2 neighbours:D

You are also correct i would strongly believe that see lives in the same area as me:(

Mamaboyd- that must suck that you are on the oak ridge moraine. If you ever get caught couldnt you say you are using the chicken poop as fertilizer instead of chemicals?. I should be able to have chickens you are right! You are on the morine and my chickens will be directly beside a river that feeds into lake simcoe rotflmao

Luna- you are right "screw em its my property"

Thanks for your input and support

I am going to call the town again right now wish me luck!

Good Luck Radical53, and yes, it does suck to live in the oak ridge moraine, right beside the ganaraska forest. Our property(72 acres) has been in my hubby's family for over 100 years, and yet now with this stupid moraine thing they are ever so picky about everything. They didn't say anything when we built our run in shelter for our horses(no permit though, sshhh!

, but they told our new neighbor that is bringing a horse in a whole bunch of horse @#%@ that she had to have this and and that approved by them etc before she could bring it home,(when the people before had 3 horses and didn't have to do anything) which is ridiculous, this is farming country, we have cattle on our property, etc, what's the difference between a horse and 30 head of cattle?? Anyhow, we are just hoping nobody stops by and says something, the coop is behind our woodshed , and we are training our kids to tell anyone who asks them , that it is a tool/garden shed just in case. Hate to have the kids lie, but.....
Let us know how you made out today!

I phoned in and i got the address of a system that has lots of info from 1999 to present:
http://64.187.53.36/dev/frame.htm
The problem is that i couldn't find anything about chickens. And i cannot ask about chickens as it is the same person as before. I said i a am doing a speech on the various bylaws in georgina and cannot find info on the gems system so i was invited to go in and pick up a paper copy on the info requested. So i will probably go there next week and hopefully she was full of s#$# when i phoned in originally!

I went to your link, and put Poultry in the search field. 5 documents came up. I don't have time right now to read them, but if you try it, you may find what you need. I did scan the first one, and it was re: the keeping of animals other than dogs and cats. It's probably exactly what you need.
Good luck! Oh yeah, you need to know your zoning. You may be able to get that from your tax appraiser's office or from your zoning board. Hopefully it's not the same lady that does it all"!!!
